1966 f100 with 352 or 390 engine noise with video
Back in October I bought a 1966 f100. The truck came stock with a 352 v8, the previous owner told me that he had that engine rebuilt and bored out etc. so that it was now a 390. He didn't have any paperwork, but said the rebuild was about 5000 miles ago the engine does look like it was rebuilt at some point. I was more into the fact that the body was solid, something hard to find up here in Massachusetts. He drove the truck up from North Carolina about 8 years ago and i know it sat for a little while before i bought it. When I drove it home there was some knocking in the engine area, but it finished the 1.5 hour long drive fine and continues to drive fine. I know that the knocking cant be good so i have included a video of the truck running so that everyone can hear the noise, about half way through i gave it some gas so that the knocking becomes more noticeable. I'm not sure what I should check first, i have listened to the engine with the broom handle trick but can really narrow down the origin of the sound. any ideas?

Have you pulled the valve covers to take a look? Almost sounds like a rocker hitting the valve cover. Had that happen on a friends motor I just built (351W). Put it in, got it running and heard something like that. Pulled that cover and one rocker was hitting the baffle inside the vc. Should pull them off and look anyway, maybe you'll get lucky and that's it.

Well their our a number of things to check and all post sound like good areas to check. It really make it hard not knowing what someone did or didn't do right from the last time it was apart. But pull the vc's start it and let run while checking out the valve train. No bent push rods. And rockers train is all tighten down. Plus maybe do a compression check test see what that may tell you. My hearing is not all that good any more but kind in the video sounded like an exh leak. But having headers does make the valve-train a lot very noisier that cover noise too. You can remove one spark plug at a time while it running and see if the noise gets louder, maybe you can track it down this way.. Well just don't run it to long like this as it can only get worse and do more damage..Keep us up to date on you project thou..

1996 f-100 352 fe v-8 engine knocking.
I read a post someone was having a knocking issue with knocking in their engine with accompanying video. I also have this issue, however my noise starts when the engine warms up. I have removed vc's and checked torque on all lifters and all rods seem good and snug. However still have the issue. From the hood sounds like it's in the engine, when under the truck sounds like it's in the tyranny bell housing, had trans rebuilt and still have the issue. I read all the responses on possible issues. I will try all suggestions and report back. If anyone has any other ideas as to the cause please let me know. Might just rebuilt the engine and see what's up...

The Fe fuel pumps are great for knocking, many yrs ago, I was chasing a knock and pulled the pan checked all the rods etc.
then lastly removed the fuel pump and found a lot of play in the arm. I replaced it end of noise..
A long dowel or screw drive place the timing cover placed up to ones ear is real noticeable or placed on the pump itself..
