2001 F-150 Rattling/Ticking at 75mph-80mph

At the above speeds my truck has a rattle/ticking. I think its the cats but I'm not sure. I wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem. I checked all the obvious like the heat shields and stuff. The truck has 118000 miles on it and has been in So. Cal. its whole life.

You're probably going to need to be a little more details as to when this happens?

yes... it could be the heat shields on the exhaust.
other things to check are;
  1. the drive line, give the U joints a check.
2. the wheel and tires, make sure that there is nothing in a tire or out of balance & are your rims tight.
3. check to see if a inner fender well liner is broken loose and flapping in the breeze.
4. is the passenger side seat belt caught in the door.
5. check to see if an exhaust hanger/mount is broken
just a few thoughts...but best to get under there and check

I just repaired a F-150 with similar issue ( although mostly on accelerating, and at RPM's above 1800 or so). I suspected heat shields, but on a truck vs. something like a Crown Vic, the heat shields are pretty well secured. It ended up being a hanger rod broken loose from the rear of the muffler, an some internal baffles in the muffler that were loose. $57.00 muffler later, all is as quiet as it gets.

Dave

Note- the broken off hanger bar was a little hard to spot because it was a clean break right in the weld.

The one I just repaired was the same thing. Sounded like it was just behind the front seat. It also didn't make much noise with a rubber mallet.

I know this was back in early 2011 when the last time this thread was commented on, but I was going through my threads and wanted to update this. It was a broken exhaust mount.
