1971 F-250 4x4 manual Trans. shifter removal
I need to take off the manual shifter from my truck this Thursday.
1. The transmission is a NP-435 4spd, I have the original shop manuals and I was wondering how to remove the two pins located at the top of the transmission and on either side of the shifter? I am thinking an easy out will work....any other tips?
Friday I am towing my truck down to have the replacement cab (cab fire in original) placed on the frame. The wrecking yard told me to get the shifter off if possible to ease the placement of the new cab otherwise I would leave it like it is.
2. What does the FE stand for? I see a lot of people talking about it in reference to big block engines.

Woody, the shifter is held in by a retainer, you don't have to remove the pins. The retainer has a slot in it for the shifter to come out of. Just push down on the retainer hard and turn it ccw to remove it. It is spring loaded so it should pop out when you turn it far enough. As for the FE part, I don't think is stands for anything. It has been debated several times.

Jeremy,
I will look at the transmission again, however, it looks like it does not have the retainer you are talking about.
The top of the transmission case is different than the original shop manual picture. what is the retainer suppose to look like?

Woody, here is a link with the exploded view of the NP435. The retainer is #72. Push it down and turn it ccw. It actually uses the pins you mentioned earlier to lock down on but you have to have the shifter out in order to remove the pins.
