Tracking Down A Bad Sound

What is the best way to narrow down the sound I am getting from the front of my engine? It is a come and go thing that has been there a long time. Seems to be coming from the bottom maybe the oil pump?

other info? only does it when hot/cold, certain speeds or only at idle, sounds like. Does it go away when you push in the clutch or if while in neutral and the clutch is out if you push a little on the shifter like you're gonna put it in gear.

I had that problem, scatgo. I fixed it with a louder radio, problem solved. I think jacob axed the right question. Is it a whine, popping, grinding, whistle, or rap music?

a 3/4 or 1 inch hose, One end to your ear and the other around the engine till you can narrow it down, Just dont get it close to the Fan!

Will do it on a cold start up then go away. It has not done this in a long time but its back. Clutch position or shifting have no effect. Its a not so loud rhythmic shushing ticking sound that has a slower rhythm than what the engine speed is. And it almost always goes away after it warms up.
