Another zf swap

all he needs is the trans and the shifter on top. He will probubly need to have the drive shaft modified to fit right. The zf has a fixed output yoke and depending on the wheelbase of your brothers truck will determine what needs to be done.
If he has a longer wheelbase with a 2 piece drive shaft then the front one will need to be lengthened so that the front shaft reaches the yoke. And if its a short wheelbase with a single shaft it will need to have a shaft with a slip joint in it made.
Good Luck with the swap, ya'll will love the zf. Its a much better tranny.
Let me know if yall have any more questions, iv done it and researched every area of it so im sure i can help you out.

i just though of this, if he has the entire donor truck. he might be able to take the front of the 2 piece shaft in the f350, and use it with the rear piece of the shaft already in the f150. I believe that the that will work as long as the trucks are of a similar wheelbase. Might as well try it. if they both have single shaft you might be golden, all you would need is a conversion u-joint that takes the 1350 u-joint in the f350 shaft and converts to a 1310 u-joint in the f150 axle.
Sorry for all the info, but i hope it helps.

IIRC Both the 92 F150 4wd and the 90 F350 4wd have a slip yolk at the back of the tcase and a fixed yolk in the front. Are the mazda and zf differnt lengths?

The Mazda and the ZF are the exact same length and to do this is basically only a matter of swapping one transmission for the other. I have done it on 2 different trucks. You need to use the F150 trans mount and I always replace the slave cylinder with a new one for an F150 while I'm in there. I once had a slave cylinder go bad and had to pull transfer case and transmission out just to replace the slave so I learned this lesson the hard way! Also don't forget to look at your clutch and pilot bearing while you're in there. The slave that comes off the ZF looks a little different and just to avoid a possible a compatibility issue I use an F150 slave since it's an F150 slave mastercylinder it's gonna be connected to, but I can't say that the ZF slave won't work...I just never tried it. The bolts holding on the ZF slave are shorter than the bolts holding on the Mazda slave so depending on which one you use you have to use the matching bolts. Good luck with it!

Ok, that makes sense. If its a 4x4, they are both slip yoke. I was thinking 2wd. But, even if they are both 4x4, the zf is still gonna be shorter. The rear tranny mount is the same, but the tail housing is shorter.
Like RED was saying, replace the slave while your in there. It should come with a new throwout bearing. I would also suggest doing the clutch while your in there, and also turn the flywheel. It doesnt cost much and will help save the new clutch and make it engage smoothly.
