ECOBUST No EcoBoost Snow Plowing in 2015 F-150
We talked last week about the $50 Snow Plow Prep kit for the 2015 F-150. We then went into detail about how to choose the right snow plow for your Ford truck. The prep kit is available on any cab configuration, but only if you have the 5.0L V8 option as an engine. Why no EcoBoost?
According to Tim Esterdahl of PickupTrucks.com, the answer comes down to airflow. On the EcoBoost-equipped F-150s, including the 3.5L and the new 2.7L, the intercooler is located directly behind the plow blade. That restricts airflow to the intercooler, hurting the performance of the engine or even potentially causing damage.
Some people might just assume the the 2.7L EcoBoost or the long-running 3.5L EcoBoost simply cannot handle the performance needs of plowing, but that’s not the case. The 3.5L especially makes more torque than the V8 so it’s capable of handling the job.
We’d imagine not too many people are going to spec the snowplow prep kit overall, meaning it’s probably not the most cost-effective for Ford to completely redesign the EcoBoost intercooler system to work with a snow plow.
Ford and BOSS Snowplows would like to remind you that using a half-ton truck for snowplowing is only for light-duty, residential or small business work. Plowing can cause extra wear and tear, and a 3/4 ton or larger is recommended for heavy-duty duty.
