Next Gen

We've known basically since day one that the North American Ford Ranger, which landed here for the 2019 model year, was just a placeholder. The truck itself has been on sale for some time now in other parts of the country, which means an all-new version isn't too far off. And Australian rag Car Expert recently learned a ton of details about what we can expect from the next-gen Ranger, though some of those features many not necessarily make it to the U.S. version.

Power Sources

The first slew of details pertains to the new Ranger's engine lineup, and it's quite interesting to say the least. Ford is apparently getting rid of the 3.2-liter five-cylinder diesel in the international Ranger and replacing it with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo-diesel. Otherwise, the familiar 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder will take its place as the base engine choice.

Interesting Choices

That diesel, of course, is the same one currently used in the Ford F-150. So needless to say, it would make the next-gen Ranger one heck of a towing machine. And if that isn't enough, the 2022 Ranger will also reportedly get a plug-in hybrid option, which couples Ford's 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder with electric power.

Coming to America?

Whether or not the plug-in Ranger ultimately makes it to the U.S. or not isn't clear. Ford isn't bringing the new Explorer plug-in hybrid to the states, so it's probably unlikely, though we imagine it would sell quite well. Regardless, every engine choice in the next-gen Ranger will mate up to Ford's 10-speed automatic transmission.

New Tech

As far as technology goes, the new Ranger is expected to receive Ford's SYNC4 infotainment system with a new 12.8-inch vertical infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch screen in the instrument panel. It also features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with remote connectivity, both options that consumers are guaranteed to be pleased to see.

Team Effort

Ford is marketing the new Ranger as a 2022 model, but it's expected to be released later in 2022, and may not even debut in Australia until early 2023 at the latest. It will be based on a modified version of the T6 platform from the current model, with development shared between Ford's Australian engineers and their American counterparts.

Market Dominance

With any luck, the next-gen Ranger will bring a host of welcome changes to the segment, and that appears likely at this point. Ford is determined to dominate the red-hot mid-size truck segment like it already does in the full-size truck market, so we can certainly expect a lot from the forthcoming Ranger.
