Off-Road Ready

We've learned a lot about the all-new 2021 Ford F-150 since its reveal weeks ago, including quite a bit of information regarding its many cool new features and options. However, there's one new perk that seems to have been recently uncovered by Autoblog that should have off-road fans excited, and that's the presence of Ford's off-road rock crawl mode.

More Money, More Content

First off, it appears that the FX4 package will return for 2021, which should come as no surprise given the popularity of the off-road-focused option. It will also apparently cost more, but that price also includes a brand new feature - the aforementioned Rock Crawl mode.

High Tech Assistance

Rock Crawl mode made its debut in the 2020 Ford Super Duty Tremor, and now appears to be ready to trickle down to other models. In essence, the mode operates in 4x4 low and aids off-road driving by modifying the transmission and traction control settings as needed.

Power Manipulation

The truck is capable of detecting when either of the front wheels loses traction, at which point it can apply the brakes to that particular wheel while sending more power to the one that does have grip. That allows the truck to pull itself out of sticky situations where it might otherwise be left stuck.

Largely Carryover

Aside from the addition of Rock Crawl mode, the 2021 FX4 package appears to be mostly carryover from the current offering. That means it also comes with off-road-tuned shocks, hill descent control, tray-style floor liners, skid plates for the front differential, transfer case, and fuel tank, and optional all-terrain tires.

More Specifics

The FX4 package will be available in a four-wheel-drive configuration with an electronic locking rear axle with every engine in the 2021 F-150 lineup, save for the entry-level 3.3-liter V6. Buyers can add the package to XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum trim levels.

Slightly More Expensive

The cost for all this extra goodness will reportedly be $1,005, which is $100 more than what it costs on the current 13th generation F-150. Still, that's a pretty solid bargain considering all the content that money buys. Thus, we expect that the FX4 package will remain a pretty popular add-on moving forward.
