Hi all - I've had the truck for a few years now, haven't put too many miles on it, mainly for towing an older 5th wheel, heres a pic of it.
So I replaced the headlight bucket & running light housing & all incandescent bulbs with LED's cept dash bulbs, the turns were working for awhile as it had an electronic heavy duty flasher but now it seems to have decided not to function.
I've bench tested the flashers, they're fine, tried a couple a new LED ones from amazon - Chinese of course, dont work so Im suspect. I understand the thermal / no heat issue when using LED's vs. incandescent bulbs - its as bit baffling though...
Anyone recommend a really effective LED flasher & What have folks done when converting to LED's throughout the vehicle to make function properly ?
Also, are the factory wiring diagrams available online somewhere ? that'd be great !
you know, i used to own a Saab 93 & I was able to download the complete interactive factory service manuals, it was absolutely amazing how well & easy they were to use - any chance in hell any Ford manuals are available like that ??
when i did led conversion on the 2004 flatbed truck, i left one set of regular lights down on the frame in the rear under the bed. everything worked perfectly. but if the bulb burned out everything went wonky. that was the easiest way to tell the regular bulb was bad.
Does that trailer have a dually axle? That is really interesting. I am not big in the trailer knowledge space but a single axle 5er with a dually axle seems kind of rare. How well does it pull?
LEDs can definitely be a pain. I did a full taillight replacement which came with integrated controls and I have not had a problem with them.
LEDs with resistor packs work well for turn signals and for brake lights as it needs to ground the PCM for TC control. The resistors can be a pain as they burn out when not mounted to the frame for a heat sink.
I stuck with OEM bulbs as LEDs light spectrum isnt what my eyes like.
The motivation is well beyond the marginal cost of the wire and current load to overcome the labor, grief, and aggravation (as evidenced by this thread) to re-lamp and/or rewire a perfectly functional lighting system. The cost of "cool" is worth paying if important to you. Enjoy.
Hey all , thx for responses. Funny what folks think re: LED’s vs others . In my 2014 Ram I finally upgraded the lites to HID’s because the OE lights sucked big time!
same is true of the 95 F350 - OE lighting of that era sucks , dim & low candle pwr . I put the LED’s in and I can see at night now , the OE’s were so dim. I tried all the sylvania gold and silver bulbs & they were decent but expensive and died quick !
all that said I’ve tested most things and I thinking it’s the turn switch not a resistance issue . We’ll find out with a new switch.
and to answer re: the 5th wheel , it took me awhile to figure it out - it’s been custom Made from a class C ever to a 5th wheel - the guy swapped a Dexter dually heavy duty trailer axle
in place of the OE Rearend and pumpkin.
it’s an interesting rig and in really decent shape !
I did put back the incandescent bulbs in the upper brake light as it was said that circuit affects the transmission controller on a 4AOD trans , causes it to downshift from OD apparently- don’t want that !
