1995 F350 idled rough for a few minutes after cold start and then died (about 40 miles from home). Got spare cam position sensor from glovebox, installed, fired right up and I headed for home. 20 miles later died again (@ 55 mph, restarted and would die below 1500 rpm. After sitting for 10-30 minutes and long cranking, would re-start. Died several more times on trip home. Only code was for no check engine light. Reseated CEL bulb and it came on.
Next morning started up then died, no restart, had 1283 code. Checked wiring
from IPR to IDM & PCM.
All checked good, ran scanner while cranking and was surprised when it started. Idled well ICP was 575 and fluctuating slightly, ICP Duty cycle 12.5% when accelerated to 1500 rpm, ICP dropped to 570 and, ICP Duty cycle bounced between 10.1 and 11%. Thinking I might have a bad ICP I went to unplug it and see if it had any effect. At that point I had a brain fart and unplugged the IPR instead of the ICP. The engine died immediately and I haven’t been able to get it to start again. It cranks well and produces no smoke. I checked all of the connectors and everything is good. No codes on the AE scanner.
P1283 is pointing at the IPR circuit, but I'd still confirm ICP while cranking.
If ICP stays low with no smoke, I'd suspect either the IPR not responding under command or a power/ground issue that only shows up during crank.
