U joint noise

Hello,

I have a 2017 f250 ScSb with the 6.2, 4x4 with the manual t case. I have a 1 piece rear driveshaft with slip-yoke. Recently when backing up I hear a noise that I describe as a u-joint going bad. Note it makes this noise in reverse when backing up but not if I put it in neutral and roll backwards then no noise (no stress on u joints I assume).

I attached videos of the u joints I don’t see any slop in the joints themselves and the driveshaft physically feels solid. What do you think ?

For what its worth...........remove the driveshaft and inspect each joint for smooth movement, any bind or drag will indicate trouble.........replace both u-joints with new quality units and lube the slip yoke tube before reinstall. Regardless of mileage you can have a bad u-joint. If the sound persists move on to the next level. (prior to driveshaft removal, set parking brake and/or chock the tires).

That defiantly sounds like a u-joint failing. They don't always start out with slop like you would think, sometimes they bind and squeak.

How many miles? these joints last forever anymore and you're not straining them with a 6.2. but it is probably a u joint.

Thanks, about only 100k miles.

What happened was it accidentally got put in reverse (person driving was attempting to turn on the wipers and in their car the wipers are where the shifter is here) while going about 20mph forward, it was then shifted to neutral where it revved up (not sure how far) and then into drive at a high rpm. It started making this noise in reverse immediately after…. So I’m pretty sure the u joint took one for the team here.

I know these aren’t supposed to engage reverse when going forward and I’m not sure if it did or did not, but it definitely got dropped in drive while rolling forward and running at a high rpm.

thanks
