Crackling noise when under load

hey y'all

i want some reassurance that I'm on the right path.

I have a 94 F150 5.0L Auto 2x4, about 200K on the truck
Recently, when I apply throttle, a crackling/clicking noise seems to be coming from behind the cab on the drive line. No noise if the machine is in Park or Neutral. Noise is present when starting from a stop and when starting when changing direction (D->R, R->D).
The crackling/clicking noise can get repetitious and increase as speed increases.
My initial thoughts are the Universal Joints, but there seems to be no rotational play in the drive shaft.

Any help is appreciated.

side note, if it is the U Joints, what kind of labor hrs should i expect.

just because there is no rotational play doesnt mean the joints are not bad. remember there is an top to bottom force as well as back an forth my guess would be to apply some grease to the joints through the zerk and see if the noise continues

Can you be more specific about this noise? A crackling sounds like a very strange noise to be made by your driveline. Are you sure this is not something simple like an exhaust leak? Also you said that the noise is not present in neutral, but is it present if you throw the truck in neutral while at cruising speeds?

Also is it possible that the noise is coming from the rear diff??

I think you are long past seeing any benefits from greasing the joints, they need to be replaced. A 1 piece driveshaft can be removed in minutes, the joints themselves cost about $20-30 a piece, and figure on 1/2 hr labor per joint minimum.

i'm pretty sure i dont have an exhaust leak.
I will say that this problem started shortly after i had the fuel delivery module in the front tank replaced by the dealership. I would guess they dropped the front tank to replace it, but i dont think the drive shaft would need to be moved.
