2001 F-250 5.4 Zf5 : Final Gear and Tire question.

2001 Ford F-250 5.4 zf5 4wd. Currently Running 315” Mudgrapplers on stock gears 3:73s.

It is my daily driver and I’ve had it on the road probably 6-8k highway miles alone over last 6 months. And power/mpg/towing , Have been pretty rough since the 315”s as you’d imagine so I’m needing something different.

Im on 2” level kit and I am leaning towards a 295/75/16 toyo at3. Along with it I want to Regear. The truck will mainly be commuting and highway driving, occasionally towing.

Please tell me your thoughts and opinions on both gear and tire size from yalls experience what would be most optimal, for what I want out of it thanks in advance ! Any additional questions also let me know.

are you sure it's your tire size that has effected your fuel economy?

while I have 4:11's and 315's with a 7.3. I thought the 315 were effecting my mileage. so I put my truck back to stock height and the little 32's....made zero difference

you will never get your money back from re-gearing...and i don't think it would help any in this situation, but I'm no expert

Mine's a bit heavier, being an Excursion, I went to 5.13's with 315's, the lil 5.4 needs all the help it can get, best few tanks were 18-19's running at 63-65, which I've found is pretty consistent with most of my trucks, once you break 65-ish the mileage drops quickly.

I'm super pleased with the 5.13/315 combo, yeah, I know I'll not recoup the costs of the gear change, but having it move off the line like it does and not having to constantly have your foot in it, well worth it, lot's will go to 4.88's, I almost went to 5.38's.

I love your combo of the 5.4 and ZF5

I love this approach. People are way too timid with gears. The Tritons like to spin and don't do anything resembling work under 3k anyway.

For 295s I'd do 4.88. If 315 is ever in your future, 5.13 is awesome.

Don't even bother figuring mileage. With a full-size truck, V8 or V10, big rubber and even a mild lift ..... it just takes what it takes. Worrying about mileage is just not realistic with a gas engine doing truck work.

Please don't do something dumb like go from 3.73 to 4.10. Complete waste of time and money. Go big or go home.
