you don't NEED to but you will lose some of power to the ground...I went from 265's to 285's to 305's with no noticeable difference in power

If you have 3.73s the 5.4L will benefit from 4.30s regardless of tire size.

I have a 5.4 with 285s , I went with 4.30s and think that should have come that way from the factory.

mine with 3:73's and the V10, instantly became a much slower "doggier" feeling truck moving from 33" tires to 35"s. (same as 315 you mentioned)

i would love to move to 4:88's, not only to offset the larger tires but to actual gain some power to the ground.

minimum gears would be 4:30, but even that i dont feel like would keep you happy after a few months.

so my suggestion is either 4:56, or 4:88's

Do not go bigger than a 33" diameter tire then. The 285/75R16, 295/75R16 and 305/70R16 are all around the 33" range. I run the 285s and think they are a good size.

Going to 285s I hardly noticed a difference, but going up to 315s I did. I wanna do 4.88s..... just need a few pennies for that mod.

i hated my truck with 3.73 gears, then i installed 285 tires and it was such a DOG! It had no low end grunt and when in 4wd trying to drive through a muddy field i needed to use low range all the time. I had a shop install 4.30 gears about five years ago and it really woke up the little 5.4, i can easily spin all 4 tires in high range with just a small amount of throttle input. Low range is now like a 7.3 in low range all grunt! If you want 315's go with 4.88 gears if you tow alot of like to go off road. If you do nothing but drive on the streets and use 4wd very little go with 4.56 gears. Either way you should re-gear with 315's.
