So I went for a drive and noticed some noise around the transmission. I figured it was my parking brake. After adjusting that I spun the driveshaft.
Well it's something different. Here is the noise, what do you think it might be? I checked the oil level in the transmission and it's fine.
I hear two distinct noises. First, the drum ringing. Something is in contact with the drum causing the ring, likely the parking brake. You can try to adjust it and let it self clear.
The second noise I hear is a clicking like a ratchet. Assuming it is coming from the transmission, if it were me, I would pull the floor cover and transmission cover and have a buddy rotate the drive shaft while I was peeking inside and inspecting for the cause of the noise (and any possible debris )
It kind of sounds like the reverse idler is dragging on the mainshaft 1st gear. You have a 4-sp, right? Watch and listen to this video, the trans in it is making a similar noise at 11:46:
Well, Here is what I have so far.
What do you call the part I moved? (I need to learn transmission parts) I now can't get it lined up right to move it back. Probably just not holding my tongue right.
That is called a synchronizer sleeve. It looks like you may have only partially selected 3rd gear, and the synchronizer ring (brass part) was dragging on 3rd gear, hard to tell. Are there any problems shifting it while driving?

If you aren't in the right spot it will grind going into 3rd. That doesn't happen very often though. Just if I push up between 1st and 3rd when shifting.
Is your shifter sloppy? In particular the ball on the end that fits into the shifter forks?
Here is the end of my shifter. I would say it is sloppy, but I've never driven another T98 so I can't compare. There always has been movement of the shifter when it is in gear.
I put it back together and took it on a drive and it sounded fine. It could have been something on the parking brake. The test drive with with the rubber mat and the transmission cover off. Much noisier and warmer to drive that way.
So I decide to button it all up. Once I get the mat on I look over on a table and saw the cover seal. At that point I needed a bit of a break. After the rest, I took the mat back off and got the cover seal back in place.
I will do some more test driving when I get a chance.
