Today I was changing the parking brake shoes on my van, and to test the brakes I had the rear end up on jack stands. The calipers were still removed, with only the rotors installed so I could check for clearance/rubbing and adjust the starnuts as needed.
Unfortunately, I accidentally shifted from Park to Drive, set the parking brake to test it, then released it and moved back from Drive to Park without the brakes applied while the axle was still spinning. The rear axle kept spinning in Park, so I suspect the parking pawl may be damaged. Although not a good thing for sure, I am surprised that a parking pawl would break with the axle up on jack stand and no weight on it.
Can the parking pawl on a 4R75E be replaced just by removing the pan, or is it a much bigger job? I’m hoping this is something I can fix without spending several thousand dollars.
The parking pawl is most likely fine; they are spring-loaded, and I have rarely seen issues with them, even after throwing them in park with the wheels spinning. I would not worry about it if all is working as it should.
I've witnessed an idiot that put am 85 4Runner put the transmission in park while going 40mph. He thought it was the 4WD lever. No problems. He actually bought the truck.
If you have ever seen a parking pawl, they are usually over built. This part keeps the vehicle from rolling away. Sure, there are some that are wimpy but normally they are pretty stout.
Why is everyone looking at me? Do you think I was the idiot?
