DEF in Fuel Tank 6.7 Powerstroke
I will start by saying, I am in no way giving mechanical advise but simply telling a story of what I did to get out of this situation with my 2022 6,7 F350 with 70k miles…
If you pour DEF in your diesel tank it is not too late. I realized what I had done about 3 gallons in at a gas station in a sketchy area 700 miles from home. I had roughly 30 gallons of fuel in the truck and bought the gas station completely out of 5 gallon cans. We disconnected the fuel lines from where they meet the frame rail at the front of the fuel tank. The yellow(top) is feed and the white(bottom) is return. Just unplug both to be safe. Next we lined up some fuel tanks. The best decision for us was to click the key over repeatedly. The fuel pump isn’t that accessible and wasn’t worth the risk of frying the system. We clicked the key over in about 15 second intervals for a realllllllly long time. Filled less than 30 gallons. Flushed the fuel filters (we made the mistake of forgetting the filter on the frame). Added another 3 gallons of fuel and flushed that through the system again. Filled up a full tank and added some injector cleaner. Flushed the filters again after about a 10 mile drive. It was late on a Friday so the next morning we hit an auto store and got new filters. Replaced in the parking lot and hit another 700 miles to the next job.
This truck is very smart and the water in fuel sensor was essential. If you get a light after all these steps turn it off and drain the filters. I think the only reason mine came on is because we forgot the filter on the frame. I can’t imagine what that would have cost to take somewhere and have worked on. I spent a few hundred in fuel tanks, fuel, fuel additives, and beer(fuel). It’s been a few thousand miles since then and everything is fine. So if you find yourself in this predicament just know there is a way out.
Had to be towed and flushed out, luckily he shut it off as soon as it started running crappy, so didn't kill anything.
If you realize what you did and never turn the key on after putting DEF in the fuel, then the lift pump hasn't pumped the DEF into the system, then you only have to drain the tank and maybe flush it once and be good to go.
