I'm in the middle of my engine swap project, I'm putting a 78 internal balanced 460 into a 1983 F250 that originally did have a 460. I've got the clutch/flywheel assy arriving since it is internal balanced.
Now my problem is with the oil pan and my pickup tube. I have a Melling M84 D Oil pump, M84-DS1 oil screen/pickup tube. Tried the DS2 version and that didn't fit either. The pickup screens hit the bottom of the "stock" oil pan that came with the 83 f250, and the pan has a full inch gap around it and won't seat.
I'm not sure what to do here, if I just look for a oil pickup/pan kit. Or look at a different oil pan?
I'm wondering if this guy would work for my needs? M-6675-A460 https://www.levittownfordparts.com/s...ml#col-fitment
Good call. I called melling and they seemed pretty confused about it. I'm thinking either a new oil pickup or pan would do the trick, but maybe just getting a kit would solve my headache entirely. I'm trying to chat with summit, but I'll probably call them because it seems their chat system is backed up.
Why won't the stock 83 460 oil pan fit a stock 83 460 oil pump with a stock 83 460 pickup tube. You will need the special main cap stud also that is used with a nut to support extended pickup tube. You will also need to block off the original dipstick tube, and use a rear mounted dipstick. Whatever you can get to work. I know on some of the smaller v8's the rear dipstick could be in the pan or the block.
I'm not sure, I spoke with summit, and they're thinking it may not be a stock pan, but it sure looks like the stock pan off of an 83 f250. in the meantime, I ordered a replacement pan off of summits suggestion to try this and see if it works. Yeah on my block I'll just plug the dipstick tube since I'm using that cover.
I do have the main cap stud with the nut, so I just need to get this pan and cross my fingers it works.
If using a truck pan make sure you get the correct oil pump pickup tube, there is also a van pan/pickup tube variant. The M84-DS1 (or Ford part# E4HE-6622-BB) pickup is designed for the van oil pan. You will need the Melling M84-DS2 (or Ford part# E4E-6622-CA) oil pump pickup tube for a truck oil pan. Hope this helps.
