oil pan ?

Building 51 f-1 using mustang II ifs, 460 ford motor. basic trial fit indicates that the stock oil pan hits the crossmember that was installed for the new suspension. Solution would be a rear sump oil pan. Looking for input on this.

thanks,
Steve

I think Jegs and Summit both carry the rear sump oil pans for 460 engines if you need one...

I just went through this on my 56...I bought the rear sump kit, pan, pickup tube, dipstick, etc. In addition to the pan, the oil pump must also be changed out since the tube now enters from the side vs the bottom. Be aware that even though the sump is in the rear, the oil pump stays mounted in the front...this means that there is still a hump in the front of the pan. You must also be aware of the location of the dipstick...no longer does it come out of the timing chain housing, but now it comes out the side of the oil pan. In my case it hit square in the middle of my brand new Sanderson header!

also look for oil pans from the 83 & up trucks with 460's or 460 equipped 4 x 4's (mid 70's and up for 4x4's), they used the rear sump oil pans and depending on how you positioned everything, should work (i think the swap pan for the 460 into the fox mustang is in actuallity the truck pan, but not 100% sure).
the 460 equipped vans i think used more of a mid sump pan then a true rear sump and might not work depending on how everything lines up.
check local wrecking yards and that way you can get everything at once. pan, pickup and dipstick, but i would recommend getting a new oil pump and not use the old one.

All 1975/91 Econolines with a 460 engine have a reverse sump pan and pickup tube (as do Econolines with: 351W's, 351M/400's, 302's). However = The Econoline engine mounts and brackets will NOT work on an F series truck.

There are aftermarket kits you can buy with all the parts you need to convert to a rear sump pan. Going with a Ford setup? Make sure you get the stud that attaches the rear sump pickup tube: D7HZ-6345-A.
