What is this thing in my hand? Replaced timing chain and gears and want to replace this thing but don't know what it is. It slides over the crankshaft after you put the timing chain cover on.
What's wrong with it that you think you need to replace it? It looks fine from my house, and likely far better than any new replacement that may be available, if there even is one.
Better design actually IMO
Using the spacer, the 410 and 428 could have the balance weight not be on the damper
Also
That way the damper does not need to be replaced in case of a groove, just the spacer needs to be replaced
If the groove is big enough to catch your fingernail the front crank seal wont seal
Take some 320 emory cloth, polish all the grime and rust off of it and check the seal surface with your fingernail

Already did that and it will grab your fingernail. There's defeinitely a grove where 50 years of dirt particles trapped between it and the seal ground it down. That's why I want to know what it is so I can order a new one. Are they even available? The grove is right where I put the two red lines. It is noticable. Thought about a speedy sleeve but I watched a youtube where a guy put on a speedy sleeve and then couldn't get it to slide through the seal.
And doesn't this design allow you to perfectly center the front cover? By installing it before you torque down the bolts, it self-aligns the cover.
Hard to do with most 1-piece dampers because there are almost always some bolts behind the damper ring.

I had the same problem on an FE several years ago. I sleeved it, and it worked out fine for me.
