2004 F550, 6.8, 4R100 slipping when overheated, then fine?
Hi all, I have a 2004 F550 with a 6.8 V10 and 4r100, has roughly 108,000 miles on it. Last winter I was plowing, and had to rock it a few times to get it unstuck. It started slipping a little going into first and reverse, then I had absolutely no gears at all. I checked fluid, it was about a quart low, added a quart, but no change. I thought maybe the transfer case was in netural, but park held the truck so that wasn't it. I then pulled it off to the side where it sat until today. I hopped in it, and it moves forward and reverse. I haven't yet had a chance to get it on the road, but I was anticipating having to pull the transmission and swap it. Is there a chance the fluid just got hot, causing the no gears scenario, but now it's actually OK? The fluid doesn't look burnt, and the transmission temp gauge didn't look out of the ordinary when the slipping/no gears was happening last winter. Paging @Mark Kovalsky
I don't know. Try driving it and see what happens. My guess is damaged clutches.
Hi @Mark Kovalsky sorry for the delayed response on this. I ended up replacing the transmission as the fluid smelled extremely burnt. I bought a reman transmission from Autozone, replaced all the cooler lines, the radiator, and the tranny cooler itself. Obviously it also came with a new torque converter. I put in roughly 16.5 quarts, but now the dipstick is reading severely overfull. I checked this after getting the truck up to temp, shifting through all the gears manually, and even taking it for a test drive (it shifted perfectly). I confirmed the dipstick part number is correct for the truck. How is it possible that it reads so overfull when I only put 16.5 quarts in?
