Best US made duraspark 2 module?

Blue grommet. 2 plug DS2 module.

It’s chinesium, been on there about 5 years and I’ve been wanting to replace it with a heavy duty US-made module for awhile.

It’s firing a built 400 with a stock coil and MSD distributor.

What’s the best heavy duty US made module available?

thanks

Most swear by the OG Motorcraft Ignition Module with blue grommet. Mine is a 76....so I'm running the module with blue grommet for DS2.
Not sure it's made in the US. I bought mine from Rock Auto...like 15yrs ago.

Some indepth infro thanks to Number Dummy to help with the search.
Ignition modules,
74 (black grommet) and 75 (green grommet) are year specific and will not interchange. 76 to 79 (blue grommet) are interchangeable.Ignition modules: 1974 is 1974 ONLY / 1975 is 1975 ONLY.
Blue module introduced in 1976 was used well into the 1990's. D4AZ-12A199-C 1974 only

DuraSpark ignition modules identified by a colored plastic insert located above where the wires feed out.
2 others: One has a redplastic insert, the other has a yellowor brownplastic insert.
Redmodule is D7AZ-12A199-Aused in some CA vehicles ONLY.

D9AZ-12A199-C(replaced D8AZ-12A199-A). One of these modules isyellow , one is brown.. Since the part number was replaced, I cannot recall which module was which color.
These modules were used in 1978/79 302 & 351M/W vehicles sold in high altitudes only. 351W: Passenger Cars & Econolines only.
1U2Z-12A199-AA(replaced D6AZ-12A199-B - D7AZ-12A199-B - D8VZ-12A199-A - D9VZ-12A199-A) .. Ignition Module -blueinsert (Motorcraft DY-893) / Available from Ford. Myriad 1976/90's FoMoCo vehicles.

Green Sales in OH.
Collectors Auto Supply in WA.
Haven Ford in KS.
Klimesh Motor Sales in IA.
Bob Allen Ford in KS.
Freese Motor Inc in IA.
Wesley Obsolete Parts in KY.
Dennis Carpenter Ford in NC.

Side note question: does that MSD distributor have a stand alone ignition module, meaning is it a RTR or HEI? Because
MSD distributors, specifically the Ready-to-Run (RTR) and HEI models, feature a built-in ignition module. Here is the breakdown of how MSD distributors handle ignition modules:
  • Ready-to-Run (RTR) Distributors: These include a built-in module and do not require an external ignition box (like a 6AL).
  • MSD HEI Distributors: These come with a high-performance MSD ignition module pre-installed inside the cap.
  • Pro-Billet Distributors: These typically do not have a built-in module and require an external MSD Ignition Control.

77&79F250,

If you are going to quote number dummy, it has to be in ALL CAPS and ANGRY!!

Thanks again for that info. I actually have access to an original CA emissions/ red grommet “hot” module, but not sure what I’d need to change to make it work.

I heard with the red grommet, I can do away with the ballast resistor ( no like MOPARts on me ford) and there is no crank retard function, and more sparkier lightning bolts which would be awesome. I think. Internet rumors.

77&79F250, I always appreciate you’re vast wealth of knowledge.

It is an MSD RTR.

I was all set to go with a 6AL box, but was talked out of it by someone pointing out that my duraspark was all original with a 45 years and a gazillion miles on it.

stand by for pics

Can you even find a new US made module anymore?
If not, and no NOS are available, seems to me that the "faked-to-appear-stock" method of putting a USA (or at least high quality version) of a GM HEI module inside of a Ford Duraspark case (as a heat sink AND a hiding place) is the way to go.
Seems like DUI (Davis Unified Ignition) has, and Pertronix has (or had) good replacement GM modules that you can use for this. Probably not USA made, but generally considered to be of better quality than most.
Looks stock that way, but with less expensive, easier to find just about anywhere, GM style electronics.

Even the Motorcraft ones are imported. typical with everything like this today.

Finding an NOS one is probably the best bet. or just carry a spare that's always been standard proceedure.

And carry that spare IN THE BOX it came in. And set/store it in a position that has the gooey (back side) is facing up. Store it in a cool and out of the sun/heat the best you can. I would even put it in a zip lock bag. Do not set any thing on top of the box to push is down to touch the gooey side. Yes it is not gooey yet, but when the heat gets to it and it does that gooey stuff is NOT coming off of what ever it gets on. I have installed them with what was left of the card board box still stuck to the back side gooey mystery material.

That's funny about the goo stuff. Sad, but true...
And don't forget to keep the receipt should it be one of those with the lifetime warranties on it.
You may never get to use the part, but at least you can use the warranty!

The older salvage yards are full of them, AMC even used Duraspark. I have only ever had 1 OEM fail.

Not my salvage yard around here, I have them all in my parts shed already.

I use Ford blue painters tape and tape all the reciepts (I need to save) on the back side of my shop door. I use red sharpie to highlight any DATE specific ones like for batteries.

I have two tested & stored open side up boxed behind the seat.

One was behind the seat for many years and the potting run out into the box while just stored, it was a mess, but it worked to get me home when needed. I cut the potting / cardboard mess away, might yet refill it with J B Weld. Other one is new and then there is the one under the hood.

I did work out a plan to ease life under the hood for it, like mount it 10" closer to the front and pipe cooler air to it from a hole no longer used for AC lines to the condenser.

Not shown is idea to twist it to open side up.
