I need to replace the TFI ignition module on my 88 F250 5.8L. I talked with ford today and they told me that if I replaced the TFI module, then I would also have to replace the distributor. Ford says that a new TFI module would 'burn up' an old distributor. This dosen't sound right to me!!! Does anybody have any experience or advice for this. My distributor dosen't look that old, and I'd hate to throw away money. Also, if anybody has any tips for removing and installing a new TFI ignition module, I'd appreciate it. Thanks
The Ford dealer is givin u a line of crap. You can replace the TFI ignition module without replacing the whole distributor. To replace the module, go to the autoparts store and buy the special ratcheting star (Torx) wrench they sell specifically for removing the distributor-mounted module. It makes the job alot easier. The new module should come with some dielectric grease to smear on the mounting surface. This is an easy and inexpensive remove and replace. Dont let the unscrupulous dealer talk u into a whole new distributor, unless of course yours is mechanically worn out... When modules go, usually they either work or they dont. You can replace the module without removing the distributor.

when you remove the tfi module you may find that the connector for the stator(pick up) may come out with the module but then you only need to replace the module and stator no meed to replace dist.
Before loosening the distributor take a marker or chisel and create a mark on the dist base and intake. This will help you realign the dist to it's original position. Still may want to time the engine afterwards. I watched my mechanic do this recently. TFI went out and they recommended replacing the pick-up/stator module at the same time. It take a bit more time but it ensures that all of the connectors make good contact between the stator and the TFI. Replacing the stator does require pulling the dist. completely out and then realigning later. That really makes the mark on the dist and intake invaluable.
Thanks for your help fellows. I think I'm going to try and get that special tool. I don't want to mess around with taking out the distributor. If I can't get the tool, I guess I'll have no choice.
I hear some of this terrible info.different ones get from Ford dealers and i can't belive it. I was a Ford dealer tech for 35 yrs. and i never worked with anybody who would give you that kind of info. All of the techs i ever worked with went out of there way to be helpful. Come to ole Gar. and i will do my best to help you.(Don't know everything thou.)
Went to napa and they didn't have that distributor wrentch. Does anybody else know where I can get it. I don't really want to screw around with removing the distributor if I don't have too.
mark the dist.base to the intake, loosen the holddown bolt, turn the dist.to a position where you can acess the the two bolts that hold the module to the dist.all i ever use is a thinwall 1/4 in. deep socket. works great!! when finishedcarefully align the two marks and you are ready to go.
The hard part is getting the thin wall 1/4" deep socket. I even thought about grinding the wall down enough to get it to work, but when I talked with NAPA about buying the Ignition Module they asked it I had the tool needed to remove it. It has been a few years since I bought the special Ignition Module socket from NAPA, but can't imagine them not being able to get you one. Wonder if they can order you one.
I just used my regular snap-on socket. It worked fine. I had to rotate the distributor though, but I think you would have to no matter what because the module pulls straight down to come off and there isn't enough room to pull down where it is at.
