7.3 IDI engine rebuild

Hello! I am a new engine builder and had a couple quick questions. I have a Chilton manual to assist me but can’t find if the torque specs for the main caps and connecting rods are dry or oiled. I also purchased the torque cam from Russ Repair shortly before he passed, is the timing the same? I remember reading that timing was supposed to be advanced or retarded one tooth for a different aftermarket cam, figured better safe then sorry. Thanks in advance,
-Tim

I recently rebuilt one of these as well. I work at the dealership and here are a couple excepts from the factory repair manual. Important to note that the torque specs in the second picture are correct. The specs in the first one are a misprint.

I did not replace the connecting rods, but when I reinstalled them I did not oil them. The workshop manual made no reference to oiling them so it probably doesn’t matter. I added engine assembly lube to all the bearings and threads though. I also applied a thin layer of oil to the piston rings and cylinder walls to help with the ease of installation.

I used the same cam, as you, and I left the timing in the stock configuration. I hope he would have included information about adjusting timing if that’s what’s intended. The purpose of modified cam lobes is to increase/decrease the duration that the valves are open for. Any overlap should be accounted for when designing the cam. Adjusting the timing seems like it would only counteract the effects of an aftermarket camshaft. I have purchased other aftermarket camshafts for other gasoline engines and they all instructed me to set the timing normally.

Wow, 51 ft/lbs is all? Perfect, thank you so much!

Perfect, thank you! How happy are you with the cams performance?

I’ll have to get back to you on that. Almost done putting the truck back together.

Sorry for the delayed reply. I haven't taken her out on the highway yet so I have not yet experienced everything the cam has to offer. But so far it has made a nice increase in power. I could easily move the truck at idle speeds with the parking brake engaged (forgot to turn it off). It's not a night and day difference but it is a nice improvement.

I got mine done about a month or two ago, about 2000 miles so far. The combo of that cam with a 110cc IP and upgraded turbo from CDD is A HUGE IMPROVEMENT! On 35’s she used to struggle above 55, now she loves 75. Night and day difference, and it sounds so much healthier.

What turbo did you end up going with? The stage 1 set up or did you buy the individual part without the kit? I was going to go with a Banks set up but now I’m in back order hell so I’m looking for an alternative. Also, did you have to adjust the spring heights to accommodate for the new cam or did you leave those stock?

You never know, he might come back. I know I go through phases of inactivity. Maybe he’ll get an email notification (like I did with your last message) and log back on.
