Rear Axle shudder

Looking for suggestions beyond what I have done. (really not much)

When I did the coil spring front I also replaced the rear axle. The rear came from a low mile 2008 F250 PSD. I has 4:10 and Ford's OEM Limited slip diff. When I got the axle to the house, I had to replace the bent backing plates and I decided at that time to change the gear oil.

I used Amsoil 75w-140...and supposedly you don't have to add the mystery Limited Slip additive. I drove it on and off for about 1 year, noticed that I was getting some shudder when turning a corner. I sucked out 4oz's of gear lube and added 4oz's of Limited slip additive.

Now maybe 20k miles later, I get a shudder when turning a corner...and a severe shudder turning a corner while applying power with a load. So just in the last couple of days....added another 4oz's of additive. I know it will take some drive time for the additive to work it's way into the clutch plates.

Just looking to get ahead of a problem. I may just order a Tru-Trac and stuff that in there.

I seem to recall @cleatus12r talking about how fast these Sterling rears go through carrier bearings though.

Look for a factory e locker for a 11-16 truck. They fit easily and best of both worlds. I got mine off marketplace for $100. Have it hooked to a upfitter switch.

Heck yeah on the TruTrac.

This is the first I have heard of Sterlings going through carrier bearings quickly though.

You've been in yours a million times....is the home built case spreader worth the time to fab it up?

Absolutely! It’s almost impossible to get the required number of shims in otherwise.

One problem with the Sterling is it does not have cavities on the outside of the housing to engage with dowels on the housing spreader like Dana axles have. Therefore, the housing spreader will need a lip on each side to engage the inside edge of the Sterling’s housing.

I used Amsoil in the rear differential and needed ~4 oz of the Motorcraft friction modifier.

this is from amazon: This item cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location. Please choose a different delivery location. hazmat rules suck... trying to see if there is a royal purple or redline or something like that as some people import those brands. not sure if they would have the slush box juice or not...

Yup. That is the one. Schaeffer sells direct too. Maybe they will ship it to you. They may have a distributor local to you too.

Thanks!

i will try and call them tomorrow to see if they will ship to my base. they do not list FPO-AP, but I have found if you contact and explain some companies will make an exception to their shipping policies for military address's.
