Anyone have a gun rack?

Anyone have or use a back window gun rack in our trucks? Thinking about installing one in mine. I end up toting a long gun or two around the property pretty regularly. I don’t ever plan on leaving the property with a gun in the rack FYI. Although I do live in a very low crime area and I’m sure it’d be fine.

Fishing poles hats maybe my steering wheel bar I’m sure a 4 foot level will end up in it after awhile. My truck is 4 doors so I don’t have to worry about whacking my head on everything all the time.

Most all I can find slip under the top and bottom sections of the inside window gasket/weatherstrip. How secure is that? I’d worry about warping/stretching my window gasket out.

Currently have a aftermarket 4 piece rear window that leaks and is falling apart. I’m gonna pick up a newer trucks single rear window from a salvage plus a new gasket and install it myself.

I do. It's also a great place to hang a 4 foot level, long stick, camera pole, riot baton, extended ASP, etc. Also works to hang a camera bag's shoulder strap to to keep the bag from flying into the floor. Mine uses 4 screws to mount to metal, it likely came from Roses or K-Mart. The metal of the rack is plasti-coated, & is adjustable with a couple screws. I mounted it in line with the dividers. I might get a new back glass .... this original one is currently sealed shut ... or maybe I'll just rehab it.with new metal latches, etc. Might be a "Uncle Mike's"? Just a regular cab, I never whacked my head even with a long gun in it.

Back in the early '80s at a church here, a man had his rifle in the rack, his small son was standing in the seat ... touched the trigger as he held on ...30-06 killed a lady several vehicles away.

I have had the old school metal "tabs" mount ones that slide in the gasket. I was at the age (back then when installed), that I did not know to worry about it bothering the seal. I have also had the ones that have larger area mount style that had large plastic blades that mount in the seal. Again from a long time, now days NO gun rack installed.

What about getting the old style seat cover that has the rifle pocket in the front? It will have the rifle out of site and behind your knees on the front or back seat (where ever you put the cover) "edge". Yes you have to open the door to slide the rifle out of the pocket.

Alternate idea....

They should have been standard equipment. the first thing you did when you got a new pickup home was install a San Angelo rifle rack. put a rifle, shotgun and a lariat in it and then change the wheels.

Have a set that mounts to the dash. The under side is secured under the dash with a bungee and S hook. I can’t remember how the top side attaches. It may slide into the defrost vent. I will have to go pull them out and look. Haven’t had them in the truck since I tore it apart to restore. They are covered on good old cow fur, lol! Holds 2 guns.

Yep, they were standard equipment around here, until criminals attained more rights than law abiding citizens.

Used to carry a AR and a 12ga 18" in mine when I headed out to our place on the coast, this was in the 80's and early 90's. I think doing same now might stir up some trouble.

there's still only one high school in my country , so we drove our pickups to school and parked on school property with our guns in the rack so we could hunt after school. and even if it wasn't hunting season you had your guns, just because you always had guns.

I don't know the laws today, but I bet you'd be arrested if you had guns visible on school property.

Anyway, gun racks belong in old pickups. they go together.

Thats funny - Back in the day the first thing I did after getting trucks was go to K-Mart and buy a gun rack. Glory days. Not just a different time, it was a different world.
I did find an NOS saddle blanket seat cover on ebay from the 80s (Made in USA in Utah) that has the gun scabbard flap in front. Those worked real well. No one has made them with scabbard for a long time now.

I still have a spare, exactly like this. 1979, I was playing with a camera. 870 is in a tan sleeve inside the seat cover pouch. Left unsnapped, was easier than getting it out of the trunk, and was just as hidden normally. Normally kept a snub nose tucked in too, except when in was in my pocket.

Worked best with bench seats.

The wide plastic blade mount style.

I would imagine you could take the headliner down and access the top mount. But I do not think you can reach that far down.

Not quite as appealing as throwing a lever-action or something in the back window, but some of these are a great option as well:

My '73 had a gun rack in it at some time. The truck's two previous owners both lived in northwestern Tennessee, so it's no surprise that it had a gun rack. The rack was held in place by four sheet metal screws. The empty mounting holes are still there. It might be fun to have one installed just for the nostalgia aspect, but I fear it would make opening and closing the sliding window challenging.

When I was growing up in the 1960s and '70s, it was very common to see pickup trucks with rifles and shotguns hanging in the rear cab window, even when it wasn't hunting season. My high school was in a middle-class suburban area, so there were few pickups in the parking lots (but there were quite a few muscle cars and hot rods in the student parking lot!). I did occasionally see gun-toting trucks parked at school during hunting season, as it was a short drive to good hunting areas.
