Too many miles?

I've come across a 2003 F250 King Ranch 4wd with 300k miles at a used car dealership. It's in very good condition, runs good, but I don't know anything about prior maintenance. It's running temp is just above the halfway mark, I don't know if this is normal, the 2000 Excursion V10 I had always ran lower than that. I plan on having a mechanic check it out, but wanted to get input from the experts. It's $5000.

300K miles equals 500K kilometers. In my honest opinion, $5 is way high for this vehicle. And I don't care if it's fully loaded with 4x4 with the dreaded 6.0L diesel along with every bell and whistle available for that year. I am even more surprised this vehicle is even on a dealer lot with that kind of mileage, trying to turn a profit. If this is the diesel running at the temp you describe, I wouldn't be surprised if it's about to turn into a non-cost effective money pit to the next guy foolish enough to take possession of it. That is, unless money is no object to the next guy of course.

A rebuilt V-10 for that one would run ya $3500 from Powertrain Products. I've used them before with great results.

Roll the dice!

I bought my 2005 F350 dually V10 14 months ago for $6400. It’s only an XL but the cab was mint and had 143,000 miles and full service history.

I would venture to say the truck you are looking at is way too much money.

300k miles is a lot for a gasser. Offer less.

Keep your eyes open for something else. In addition to the powertrain you have to consider the condition of the suspension components as well as anything "rubber" under the truck. Speaking of "under the truck" did you crawl under the bed? This generation has issues with the cross members on the bed rotting out. That was one of the reasons I got rid of my 2004, the bed was about to rot out.

even with paperwork.. and great maintenance...

the engine and transmission is near its END of life...

my opinion...

and as others have said..

suspension.. drive gears and bearings....
RUST ... in and under..
all costly parts..

my 2012 6.2L has 166,000 miles.. and going strong... but I paid a very fair price for it......
from a Fleet/Lease Semi-Tractor trailer dealership. but do not expect the fully loaded ones..

Thank you for all of the feedback. Wish it wasn't so difficult to find an extended cab 4wd with leather (a must with my rescue dogs) in my price range. I've been surprised that so many have high mileage in this area, I was used to it in Houston and the average mile trucks are $$$.
