4R100 Transmission Fluid

So searched the forums but get different views on what to use for transmission fluid....Mercon or Mercon V. What are you guys using? Thinking of using just regular supertech from Walmart but still don't know which one to use. Thanks in advance.

It’s the same, Mercon hasn’t been made in a while

Mark Kovalsky’s signature: Nobody has made MERCON since 2006. MERCON V replaced MERCON. Get over it.

Ford hasn't issued a license since 2006. So anyone selling Mercon fluid is using their own recipe and standard and not Ford approved. Mercon V is the current spec.

I get it all the time at Walmart, it says on the jug for use in vehicles sevicable by Dextron 2, 3 or Mercon atf, and it specificly says not to use it in transmissions requiring Mercon V. I currently have about 3 gallons in the garage. They have it at most auto parts stores as well.

The last license to produce MERCON expired in 2006. Anyone can make a fluid that THEY say is for use in a transmission that required MERCON. But you don't know what specs it meets, if any.

NOBODY makes a licensed MERCON fluid because there hasn't been a valid license to produce MERCON since 2006.

Once again, it's not licensed so who knows what specs it really meets? It might be the same as MERCON was, or it could be repackaged Type F. It could be ANYTHING because nobody is monitoring it. When Ford issued a license to produce MERCON the manufacturer had to submit fluids to Ford for testing. Ford determined if the fluid met the spec or not and only issued a license to the fluids that met the specs.

I recommend using MERCON V.

Neither is licensed fluid and both varieties are different look at the viscosity of both on the PI sheets. They are both blended to their respective companies standards. They are not a licensed product. The only thing they are paying is a fee to use the Mercon Trademark.

Ford Announces New Replacement Specs for Mercon ATF

DEARBORN, MI – Ford Customer Service Division (FCSD) has announced MERCON V as the replacement for MERCON Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF).

Effective July 1, the production and licensing for MERCON will cease. Automatic transmissions, power steering systems and manual transmissions previously requiring MERCON must, as of July 1, be serviced with MERCON V.

“All transmissions which recommended using MERCON ATF can now be serviced with MERCON V,” said Ron Romano, FCSD Service Lubricants Technical Expert. “MERCON V is a tighter specification which delivers better anti-oxidation, anti-wear and anti-shudder properties. It also provides increased protection against deposits, rust and corrosion. All of this helps ensure customers receive a better fluid,” said Romano.

All automotive repair professionals are encouraged to make the necessary preparations with customers to ensure a seamless transition to the appropriate fluids once MERCON is discontinued. FCSD does not recommend the use of any products that claim to be the equivalent of MERCON.

Whether it is or isn't actual Mercon spec I have used it in several transmissions, transfer cases, and power steering systems that spec Mercon and it has never caused any problems.

When flushing my transmission the cheapest Mercon V I could find was Supertech from Walmart.

Well I somehow missed all the comments. Thanks for them all. I just ended up going with the super tech from Walmart. Much cheaper than getting some of the other brands and what I’ve heard it’s more of sticking to the changes with these trucks rather than quality. Kind of ironic though I was using super tech and ended up overheating today and possibly cooked my transmission. Still drives and shifts fairly decent but spews fluid out by the torque converter and can’t keep any in it. Coolers cold all the time so must be plugged up and mostly killed the tranny. Get my verdict tomorrow on how much damage is done from a transmission shop near my sisters house.

honestly have read lots of people here and on other forums who never have a problem running the super tech fluid. Yes it’s from Walmart and yes it’s cheaper and for those of us on a very thin budget works out for us most the time. When I changed the fluid 500 miles ago it was pretty black and looked like oil so really think the fluid probably didn’t have much to do with it as it was probably just on its way out and the fluid change with fresh fluid might have helped it out some.
