85 F-150 4.9l in-line six clean up

So I just picked up a 1985 F-150 4.9l in-line six and I have a couple of things I was hoping someone could shine some light on for me.
First thing is what all will I have to change and/or replace to give the truck a good tune up? (Wires, Plugs, Filters, Fluids, etc.)
Second thing is the truck starts up just fine, runs and drives just fine, all of the lights work, horn works and all that good stuff but there is still a hand full of wires that are not plug into anything in the engine bay. So I was wondering if someone knows where I can get a wiring diagram or schematic for the truck? Also any ideas on the best way to organize all the wiring in the engine bay?

Fellow board members we have another one.

Your engine is computer controlled, even though it has a carb. It's more like fuel injection than any thing else. When people start unplugging things and taking out hoses on these computer controlled trucks, things can go wrong in a hurry and you can get very poor performance and fuel mileage.

You have two choices; Read up on the EECIV system you have and try to get it hooked back up or, ditch the whole thing and get another older style distributor and carb and rewire it to work like the older style engines did. Your main problem is the timing. Your distributor has no vacuum advance or advance weights inside to control the timing, it was all done by the computer. It also controlled the air to fuel ratio with a solenoid on the carb.

Take a gander at your distributor. If you have a vacuum advance on it with a vacuum line, someone has already swapped it over. If you just have a rectangle thing sticking out with some wires coming out of it, you have the EECIV still.

Welcome to the forum!

Normal things for tune-up... distributor cap, rotor, sparkplugs, sparkplug wires, air filter, PCV valve, oil and filter.

There are extra wires on our trucks for options not on the particular truck.

Franklin2 and 1986F150six are both right.

Can you post a few pictures of your engine so that we may see exactly what you are working with? Seeing as how you just picked up a truck that is over THIRTY years old now, there is no telling what you have. The 1985/1986 computer-controlled carbureted engines are typically the most misunderstood and molested engines ever. When they were new and/or everything is intact and functioning as it should, it is actually a very good system. But over the years, previous owners often see a carburetor and think they can "clean up" the engine bay and remove all of that "smog junk." That practice will only end up with a very confused engine. Like any modern fuel-injected engine, you cannot remove parts at will and expect it to run better.

But you may be one of the lucky ones who has an unmolested truck.
