Question 302 distributor problem

Hi.Just wondering if anyone can help with a problem on my 1985 F-150 302 2 bbl carberated. I took it to my mechanic because it seemed to have a miss.At first he couldnt figure anything out except that #2 and #5 plugs only sparked a couple of times then stopped. The distributor has the module built on it.All wires plugs cap rotor etc are good.We swaped distributors same problem. My mechanic noticed that the distributor that was in the truck had markings from a wrecker. He then unpugged timing (?) re-checked spark and all worked well. He thinks that is not the proper distributor.Does anyone know what the proper one is?I was told 85 is a transition year for fuel injejtion and that the distributor with the built in module was for fuel injected motors. The wiring harness on mine has proper pug for built in module but has 2 bbl carb.

Your engine could still have that style distributor and still have a carb. They had computerized engines with carbs. Does your dist have a vacuum line going to it? Are there wires going to your carb? Also look on a sticker under the hood, and see if it says EECIV on it.

If you ever get the chance, and the money to do it, I recommend a change to the DuraSpark II system instead of the TFI system.

My computer died on my old 84, and I changed it over to a DS-II with vacuum advance. Works like a charm!

my 84 F150 300 6 has the distributor mounted module (TFI) and the feedback carb. on my truck, to set the initial timing, you unplug the SPOUT line at the distributor - that wire has its own connector a few inches away from the main 6-pin connector, and is about the size and shape of an AA battery, at least that's how it is on 84 300s. when that wire is unplugged, there is no advance since all the timing is controlled by the computer via the SPOUT line.

practically everyone here says the EECIV / TFI system is troublesome, and that you would be better off with the Duraspark II system.

I do feel a little guilty promoting that, but if you are not up to working on the electronic carbed system, or paying someone else(it may be hard to find a shop who can), then that's an easy way out.
