65' f100 4x4 manual to auto trans conversion

Hi, thanks for looking. I'm looking for advice about changing my f100 4x4 from 4 speed with a granny gear to an automatic. Can it be done without too much of a hassle? And if so what trans should I be on the lookout for to make this conversion..I wouldn't mind leaving the manual trans in there but I am looking for options so my wife could drive it if necessary.

Many thanks...

Teach her to manage three pedals. My grandmother could do that, but then again there were no automatics then either.

No.
4WD's were not available with A/T until 1973. Swapping in a A/T into a 1965 4WD will be difficult because of the way the engine/trans is mounted.

It's fairly major fabrication.
If you don't own a welder now, you'll be farming this out.
Then you have to ask: how much is this worth??

Cosmo

P.S. My bet - it'll cost a LOT.

I'd say teach your wife to drive. When I met my wife she didn't drive, and she wanted to learn on an automatic. I didn't own one so I told her if she wanted to drive she'd have to learn on a stick. So she did, and after that, the first few cars I bought her all ended up being automatics. But she drives all mine, and she's had a couple of stangs of her own with sticks.

Do you have an FE engine in the 4x4? You can do this with no welding and not too great of a hassle if you switch from the front/back mounts to a side mounting system like at this link

https://www.cjponyparts.com/trans-da...xoCra0QAvD_BwE

Then get yourself a C6 from a newer year Ford 4x4 with FE. You might even check out the C6 with the married transfer case. In that case the transfer case has a support member underneath it so you don't need one under the transmission.

The C6 with the 2WD tail housing will probably be too long to fit between the engine and the divorced transfer case. And that tail housing does not have the bosses for the transfer case shift lever mounting bracket.

1973/76 F100/250 4WD 360/C6: F100 has a married transfer case, F250 has a divorced transfer case.

Pic: 1973/76 F100/250 4WD 240/300/360 engine mounting system. 240 cancelled at the end of the 1974 model run, F150 4WD introduced in 1975.

Thanks guys. I knew it would probably get complicated so, since I'd like to drive it some time in this decade, I guess I'm best off keeping the 4 speed in there and let the kids learn how to drive a stick. The wife can drive stick but the clutch pedal pressure and loose shifter might make her not want to drive it much.

I still have a long way to go and will have many more questions for you folks, hope you don't get tired of hearing from me.
