My 88 ranger, my two 6.9 IDI trucks, and even the smallblock chevy in my boat all do the same when you remove the darned oil filter..I think it's just what vertically mounted oil filters do..

I just stick the pan under it, loosen it until it starts oozing out, and let it drain for a bit, then I remove the filter..

 

 

 

Someone has suggested using a vacuum on the oil fill to create negate pressure in the engine. This is suppose to eliminate this issue. I have never tried it, so can't say yea or nay.

 

I use a 1 gallon milk carton that I cut out the top on.

I hold it up and then unscrew it and let it drop into the plastic container.

 

Punch in further. I only punch one hole in mine and get zero oil out the top when I thread it off. The key is, you have to go in through a couple layers. It also takes time to completely drain once you punch. I usually do it then walk away for a bit.

I leave it and the drain plug open over night.
No messes here.

 

Don't forget to add a quick change oil valve while you're at it. EZ-106.

This is the same technique I follow, after punching a hole in the bottom and letting it drain. I have a very clean oil change this way.
