Hi Jim, There are a few things you can do to improve the lighting, but anything you do will benefit from better current to the lamps. The stock design does not use a headlight relay so all the current from the bulbs is passed through all the (relatively small) wiring to the switch, and then back to the lamps. Installing a coupe relays makes a big difference.

Here's a link to a very good write up on what needs to be done.

And another way of doing something similar.

Aside from that you can upgrade the headlight lenses themselves, but that's more a visual update than actually better lighting unless the stock lenses are hazy and yellowed badly. Some have done HID's as well, but that's not my preference.

Hopefully that helps.

The lights on my 96 are great. Nice and bright and good wide field of vision. Are yours aimed correctly?

Technically, I think the side view lamps are supposed to be amber by law. It's a regulation thing, just like how all rear facing lamps are supposed to be red (except for the reverse lights).

That won't give you anymore light to see by while driving. Those small side light are marker lights not part of the headlight, and like Nate said are supposed to have amber bulbs in them.

I've been considering experimenting with LED capsules in my truck's headlights but I was waiting for the technology to mature a bit more. I installed a set in my Civic a couple years ago- they're still working fine but the light pattern is less than optimal.

They should put much less demand on the wiring and switch due to their efficiency, just not sure how they will last operating at a lower voltage. Anyone have any experience with them in this application?

Lightbulb

I believe reason behind clear lenses for markers & brake lights (Euro style) is because of what exposure to sun can do to colored plastic, turning it brittle. Colored bulbs aren't as susceptible to it.
