Painting chrome rims Lariat gold...

Just curious if anybody out there with an older Lariat ever painted their stock rims to match the Lariat gold colour and how it turned out? My stock chrome rims are still pretty much mint, but I was thinking of painting them gold to match the lower half of the truck.

That, or maybe semi-gloss or satin black.

I had a '99 Supercab Lariat just like yours a few years back, except it was dark blue with the gold tu-tone. I really like the Lariat wheels. I could see them looking great in black. However, Gold I'm not sure about... It's hard to picture it. Might be one of those things that I can't make an opinion on until I see it. Your radio/AC bezel turned out nicely though, and I would have been skeptical about that too, so maybe you're on to something.

Black kind of goes with everything... but I thought the gold would just go well with the two-tone gold bottom.

Thanks about the radio bezel. As soon as I saw the Amazon Green paint can, I knew it would look pretty good. The beige, the brown and then the green.

True, but apparently they have primers and paint specifically for that now. Fingers crossed...

As with any glossy surface you have to be careful to avoid runs, etc. But you are right, they do have some good products for painting chrome these days.

Obviously once painted they will be much more susceptible to scratches, but nothing a little additional care couldn't take care of. I say if you think it'll look good, go for it. If it doesn't turn out how you'd imagined, you can always go back with a little work.

If that's the case, black will go over gold NO problem!

Not sure how realistic my Photoshop attempt turned out, but here is my attempt to show what they might look like gold...

I think it might be OK... Time will tell.

The aluminum stirrup side steps will get the Lariat gold treatment too.

Hmm.. I'm still not banking on the idea, but I see potential here. This could very well end up looking pretty neat.

Btw, don't want to hijack the thread, but your truck is beautiful. Love the green/tan. My EB Bronco is similar, though the green is a bit lighter. Here's my '99 Blue/Tan Lariat that I sold last year.

I realize the gold "might" not work 100%, but I figure it's worth a try. It won't look hideous, but maybe not stunning.

Your blue/tan looks pretty mint too. Thanks!

Thinking it through, or chickening out...

Put more thought into it, and here's my thoughts:

1/ The chrome rims are mint, as is. A testament to Ford chrome.

2/ Maybe I don't need more gold, I need more chrome.

My original Ford mud flaps are a brushed aluminum look, and the new style chrome mud flaps might be just what the doctor ordered.

Less work, and a guaranteed improvement to the look.

The original wheels on your truck are polished and clear coated alloy, not chrome.

Very nice! Thanks for sharing. Have you owned it since new? It looks showroom condition and I really like the rims.

I'm the second owner and I bought it about 3 or 4 years ago. Its not quite showroom but its in great shape inside and out. I bought these wheels cheap so I could refinish the original wheels when I finally get around to it but they are growing on me. I added a chrome bull bar so with the wheels, the side steps and the bumpers it comes together nicely.

The funniest part is I own a very rare convertible Maserati and I think I get just as many compliments on my old F150 as I do when I take out the Maserati.
