Unhappy Part name or schematic for electrical under dash

I had discussed the error codes and the batteries being hooked up in reverse on my truck with someone.
They came and looked at my truck as they figured they knew what was wrong. They reached/looked up under the dash and the part was expanded and the back side blown out. (their terms)

Apparently this part is famous for going out on the 97's, water can leak from the windshield down in behind the dash and cause damage to this part. Anyway - I didn't write down what this part was called as they were going to pick one up for me, I have yet to hear if they have and its been over a week and they are not answering nor called me back that they have it, they were getting it from a wholesaler so I am presuming its a 300 or a bit more part.

So all I can say is the part under the dash most/all of the electrical can run through it and its a common part that can go out.

Does anyone have a schematic or can you tell me what the part is?
Sorry I don't have much more info.

Thanks

Passenger side, driver's side? Could you look under your dash where they were talking about and take a picture?

Owning a 97, I haven't heard of this famously unreliable electrical component and would like to purchase a spare if I need to...

He was looking up under the drivers side. If I knew exactly what he was looking at I could take a picture. That's the unfortunate thing all I caught was that its a part that when the windshield leaks and the water runs down and behind the dash its a component that get wet and breaks. He also said its the one that the majority of the electric goes through so like my radio that is not working could be caused by this component not working. Sorry I have not been able to get in touch with him since he said he would get the part so I don't have the specific part name.

I've heard of the pcm getting water in it from a leaky windshield. It's not under the dash, but behind the drivers side kickpanel.

That may be it, is it a bit difficult to get to?

You can access it from the kickpanel, but to remove it you have to pull a few fasteners on the inner fender and pull it out from under the hood.

Yup saw a Youtube video, explains why he left sockets and a vicescrip to use when he brought the part. Guess I can use them and get the part myself.

But if a pcm goes bad, it doesn't burn/balloon out that I have seen at least.

OP, does your wait to start light turn on when you turn the key?

Did they pull the e-brake bracket loose?

My wait to start light does come on. Initially this truck 3 years ago had the dual batteries hooked up backwards not by me but someone else and also has had the windshield leaking. SO for it to swell and have the back end balloon out would make sense to me.

Sounds like you should either let them finish the job, or start over from scratch yourself and do a diagnosis from square 1.

Did he say GEM box? Some of the later ones have them and I have heard of them going out and causing things not to work like you have described. But I don't think these truck have them.

John is on point. I believe he meant gem module. We do not have them.that is a SD thing. I would get the windshield removed and resealed first. Make sure everything is dry and go from there. This leak has gone on for how long? There is no telling what all is corroded.
The pcm should be opened and checked for moisture issues.

E brake bracket doesn't appear to be loose. He said the part that majority of electronic goes through, its notorious to going out after getting wet from windshield leaking which my truck does, he took down the last 5 numbers of my vin and A/ to be able to get the part. . I reached out to him yet again today and get no answer so apparently I have lost the money I paid for the part as well as the part.
My dome light still comes on I have not tried to start it as the keys were pulled. Will I wreck more thigs if I start and drive it to town?

I did find this today small screw/bolt and he may have taken it out but I never asked where from under the dash.
