Going from a 5.4 V8 to the 2.7L Ecoboost

Hi, everyone. Sorry if a similar topic has been posted, as Ive flipped though a few pages of threads and didn't see anything. I used to be addicted to this site and have toned down my activity in recent years so it's possible Ive over looked it.

I'm trading in my 2010 FX4 with the 5.4 V8 and going with a 2017 supercrew sport w/ the FX4 package and the 2.7l V6 ecoboost. I test drove one and the test drive wasn't long enough for me to determine how big a difference in engines will be noticeable to me. Specifically, how noticeable will it be on hills and steep grades? I was wondering if anyone has made this move and what your opinions are? I don't tow anything and do only average hauling in the bed.

Thanks!

The 2.7L EcoBoost will probably be more peppy than the 5.4L in your 2010. Partly because the engine has more power, and secondarily because the 2017 weighs significantly less.

One thing I've noticed with the 2.7L EcoBoost is a notable decrease in engine braking capability. Living in Detroit, you likely will not encounter hills big or steep enough to notice the issue.

The 5.4 was gutless, so you should be happy with the 2.7EB. But you would be even happier with the 3.5, and the difference in fuel economy is not enough to matter. And the 5L is always a good option, for people who live at lower altitudes.

The 2.7 will definitely have more power than the 5.4L. Considering you are leaving the final year 3 be 5.4 with the 6 speed to a 2.7 6 speed, it'll be noticeable. Might be like going from a 4 speed 5.4 2 valve to a 3 valve 5.4 6 speed, as far as noticeable power goes. Miles per gallon should be better. You sure you don't want to wait a few months for the 2.7 10 speed is out? May get more bang for your buck and 1 mpg overall better.

Only the 2 valve was gutless. I'll say even with the 4 speed and 3 valve 5.4, it has more kick in the pants than the 2 valve ever did, even with the same 3.55 rear end. Dad has a 99 and 06 sitting in the driveway, the 3 valve beats the crap out of the 2 valve.

Without a trailer and with "normal" loads in the bed, that 2.7 will be faster than the 5.4, especially up hills.

And unloaded, or on level ground, it'll get so much better fuel economy. You'll be a happy dude.

I'm a big fan of the 5.4L engine, in fact I just bought another one this month, but the EcoBoost engines beat it hands down for most applications. Enjoy your new truck and post pics!

The EB will be night and day better than any 5.4 in every category. Go for it.

But if the test drive wasn't enough, go get a second one. Some dealerships will let you take a truck home overnight.

You'll be shocked how well it does on steep grades. Especially if you're in an area where the elevation is above 4000'.

Engine braking power is lower with the 2.7EB? That's news to me, I'm glad I went the 5.0, I live in a very hilly area (Orange County) and I find myself downshifting manually frequently. Good to know.

I've heard people mention this before, but I wonder if anyone has actually done a fair apples-to-apples test of this. I'd love to borrow a few trucks and do this with my trailer if anyone wants to spend a weekend this way. I know just the hill to test it on as well.

I've tested it between a 3.5L EcoBoost and the 2.7L EcoBoost. The difference is quite noticeable.

The most stark is in an off road situation; hill descent in 4L. With the 3.5L EcoBoost, I can do a controlled descent in first gear with no brakes. With the 2.7L, brakes are still needed even in 4L first gear.

I would imagine the difference is even more noticeable between the 2.7L EcoBoost and the V8.

My cousin has a 5.4 and comparing it to my 3.5eb the 5.4 is a turd. We've towed done long trip and even drag raced and e eco is much better at all of them.

I like everyone claiming the 5.0 must be a slouch at altitude.

I am in Colorado, and I am towing something nearly every weekend and I'll take my 5.0 over nearly everything. I have had a 99 7.3 Powerstroke and would still take the 5.0 over that.

Now my old 6.0 would be a tough call... I kinda miss my 2006.

Did you reply to the wrong thread? Nobody has said anything bad about the 5.0.
