Stock Ford Radiator Sizes?

How many stock radiators did Ford offer for a 1992 - 1996 F150 with a 302/AOD transmission? I have a 1992 model with A/C, and my original radiator is in need of replacement. I have noticed in the junkyards that some are quite a bit thicker than mine. I do not want to buy a junkyard radiator.

The one I have now is a very thin radiator no more than about 1" thick. I have seen others with the same engine combination that had radiators double that size. I am assuming more cores for better cooling? What determined which radiator your truck received? I would like the thicker radiator to replace the thinner one I have now. Can someone tell me what to tell the Ford parts counter so that I receive the bigger radiator? And will my stock fan shroud work with the thicker radiator?

Thanks!

1990/96 F150 302 AOD

1) Without A/C .. Standard Cooling.

2) Without A/C .. Super Cooling.

3) With A/C .. Standard Cooling.

4) With A/C .. Super Cooling.

And this is just for these specific trucks. The list of radiators goes on and on.

1990/96 F150: 300 or 351W with AOD, with C6, with M/T. Without this, without that...with this, with that.

Wow. That is a lot of options.

I would like the 1990/96 F150 302 AOD with option 4) With A/C .. Super Cooling.

Will you provide a part number for this, NumberDummy? And is this still avaialble from Ford? Thanks!

For your particular truck, 2 different options.

a 1" thick core, which was standard cooling

a 2-1/4" thick core, which was super cooling

A/C or not does not matter

The fan shrouds are different though, so if you upgrade to the thicker radiator, you'll need to grab the shroud also, or drill some holes in yours. If you buy a junk yard radiator, make sure they warranty it for thirty days and test it before you install it. I work at a radiator shop, and 8 out of 10 times when someone brings in a junkyard radiator it's bad!

Since the radiator I need is not available from Ford anymore, can someone recommend a good quality aftermarket "super cooling" radiator?

NumberDummy, I can't imagine that the later 1993+ models that had an 4R70W automatic transmission used a different radiator than the AOD. Are those still available from Ford?

Just have your original radiator recored by a radiator shop. If you want a thicker core, they can do that too.

I had a 2 row from a 1965 F100 352 recored. When I got it back, it was a 4 row, cuz that's what I requested.

Remove the cap, take a look-see into the top tank to see how many rows your radaitor has, then go from there.

Yeah, I know what the Ford catalog shows, I'm talking about what actually fits/interchanges

And you don't re-core plastic/aluminum radiators, you rodout and repair them, or get a new one, which is usually the same $ or cheaper.

Thanks, hivoltj. To use my existing fan shroud, would I have to drill the holes in the fan shroud to fit the larger radiator or the radiator itself?

Sorry I didn't specify, it's been a while, but IIRC you have to drill new holes in the top piece of channel running across the radiator and possibly move the little clips at the bottom over.

1990 f150 302 manual box 4x4
I had a thin radiator and I switched to the thicker super cooling one.
i bought it from pick and pull kelowna bc. For $60 I think.
the truck it came from was there because it was rusted out I believe.
i got the the thicker radiator and shroud.
going up the coquihalla, with a load in the bed on a sunny day
the difference in cooling is night and day.
i know that much.

I basically had the same truck. There was a problem with the cooling system which is why you replaced the radiator. I towed with my truck a few times and hauled firewood several times at highway speeds. The single row radiator is plenty to keep the engine from overheating.

then we’re going to have to agree to disagree,
it had 2 full tanks of gas, 5 people inside.
the bed was loaded with way more fire wood that the truck should ever carry.
then it was pulling the 2000lb boat
on that day it was almost 31c
the manual transmission was pulling up the hill in second gear
the coquihalla from hope to the summit is 31 miles.
stupid thing to do really.
we pulled over half way to let it idle for 10 minutes and then it climbed the second half.
but I can assure of this, thst truck never over heats.
but that day it absolutely did need a rest.
i didn’t even know there was a red engine light.

Because there was something wrong with the cooling system that didn’t show up until that day.

Well…it’s always been there to left you know the gauge was in a danger area. It also comes on if oil pressure is too low.
