Awesome, good to hear! Why is 5th gear out for hauling? Is 1500 RPM still too low for towing even with a turbo? I know I need to be around 3/4 pedal (no tach) to keep myself moving with a good load...but I thought a turbo would at least spool up and keep you going.

The turbo will spool up, but the EGT's will as well.
Low RPM's working the engine don't do well.

ya, not worth the effort to remove it just to put it back in when the psd turbo goes in.

that sounds good to me.OD isn't a strong pulling/performance gear.just an economy gear for when running empty or out on the flats.
im sure she's gunna pull a lot harder for ya now than with stock gearing.
i was just reading where David85 claims when he was researching the E40D and zf5,he found the zf5 was not built for towing in OD like the E40D was anyway.thats one of the reasons he opted for the auto.
i bet she feels a lot better getting up to speed and on the hills.or have you had a chance to drive it much yet?

oh man, shes a charging bull now. i just drove it straight home, the goodyear heater core lines (new) blew on me when i went to san diego a little while back, so i just looped the system with the good hose. when i pulled up to the guys place that did my gears, it spring another leak! i was jacked, but already had ordered my steel braded lines so i said f-it. id just install them before i brought it home. get to the gear guys place and said *****! i forgot the hoses... so just filled the radiator and overflow and slow and steady drove her the 45 miles home. still enough water to protect it thankfully. just finished installing them now, gonna fill it up, fire it up and take it for a drive. cant wait to get the bed back on now.

I went though 3 ZF5's in my F450 carrier from 1993 to 2003. put 980k logbook miles on the chassis. If I didn't put the truck into 5th gear on the freeway, I'd get run off the road. running an average gross of 15-17k lbs, the 5th gear did fine. if you ever owned a F450, you will testify the powertrain is extremely underrated by the factory..

Wow. How many motors did you use?
I used to be one of those guys that said "ohh it's aluminum, it's junk!" but after learning about how Oreo is out towing car trailers wth huge tires and reading stuff like this, I realize it's a bunch of internet hype.

With that being said, I still will never swap out my trusty 4 speed LOL
But if I ended up with a rig that had a ZF5, I wouldn't swap it out for a 4 speed...unless it broke, then a 4 speed would go in!

I hydrolocked my first motor at 650k. I stopped giving it any love at 475k.it had low oil pressure, so I stopped changing the oil and stopped adding SCA's. it made it that far with pure neglect. the second motor is ready to be changed out, it's got a fair amount of blow-by now and the draconian smog laws got set back two years. therefore the truck is getting re-powered this spring..
anyone who tells you these motors need to be babied is F.O.S.

HAHAHA, I love stories like this! I know I beat the snot out of mine. I don't often get to pull much weight, but the thing disapponts me in the power department so I just keep the go-pedal glued to the floor! I know Oreo's truck has surprised me, huge tires and he still tows with it...cross country wth a 2 car trailer. I bet these new 5.38's will help take some stress off the drivetrain though.

What are you thinking for re-powering?

Oreo, how did your test drive go?
