Yes. I was told that the starter is bad because it was pulling 400 amp while turning over. But it turns over normal speed, it's just that the motor has to turn over about 20 seconds before it fires. I was going to check the glow plug controller.
The mechanic that told me the starter was bad, works mainly on gas engines and I was not sure that he was correct, that is why I posted the question here.
I haven't removed the starter so I don't know what starter is in it. The truck now has 74,000 miles so probably has the origional starter.
been having issues starting mine too..... when the engine is hot (40 miles of driving pulling small trailer 2K LBS) the glow plugs don't glow due to warm engine and its been sitting for say 1 hr im in central missouri so its pretty hot outside it cranks and cranks and cranks and eventually fires.... its not air intrusion there is no white smoke i just did a return line kit about a month ago and had no leaking issues and when the GP's run it fires right up.... but it doesn't sound like its turning over as fast as it used to.... the batteries are age unknown.... starter is pretty clean like it could be fairly new but i didn't put it on so i don't know the age on that either. would batteries be my culprit?
i had one of my batteries tested at advance auto once.........their tester showed that it was at 12.38 volts and that the battery was good but low on charge.....I charged and charged and charged that battery and got nowhere with it.....replaced it with a new battery and the truck spins over way faster than ever before.....the old battery was about 5 years old and I believe it had a dead cell....unfortunately, the truck sat for a winter and didnt get driven very much..im afraid that the one battery may have froze partially and thats why it gave me so much greif.....
Just something else to think about.......even if their tester shows its good, dont think that the battery cant still be part of the problem....
yes both of my old batteries showed good but being just 550cca they didn't have the power to start engine when cold, would glow good then nothing to crank with. went to 850cca and no problems since.
