Gas tank fill vent hose

I have a new fill hose for josh's 79 aft axle tank but i am missing the small vent hose that goes from the tank to the filler neck. Can i just use some heater hose or will the gas eat it up? If not, where can i get one?

I wouldn't use heater hose. I bought mine by the foot at car-quest for fuel hose. I don't remember the diameter. I even bought the big filler hose there by the foot. I am sure a good parts store could get it.

just use fuel line from a parts store. They should ahve high pressure and low pressure. the high pressure is expensive so just get low pressure.

Can you explain that? Mine is a PITA to fill, I have to just dribble the gas in or it will pour out. I was thinking it was a venting issue.

Filler hose

Might check the condition of the filler hoses, sounds like it might be collapsed, which tends to happen to them with age. And if it's pre 77, it tended to happen more, used to have to fill my 75 f150 slowly or that would happen.

The filler hose and vent hose came taped together in two spots from the factory. It's not obvious to me why it helps, but several members, including myself, have experienced a noticeable reduction in filling problems when taping the hoses together per the factory setup. My guess is that taping the hoses together helps keep them straight and prevents them from collapsing.

A couple years ago, all of the sudden my '79 would not fill, at all. I could not for the life of me figure out why, because both the filler hose and vent hose were in good shape and had not collapsed. The tank was free and clear of obstructions. Out of desparation I replaced the filler hose and vent hose, and the problem went away for the most part. Going the next step and securing the hoses together almost completely eliminated the problem, and I can't remember the last time I had trouble filling the tank.

You need to tape the fill hose and the vent hose together in order to allow the tank to vent while filling. If your vent hose is sitting lower than the fill hose the tank will not let the fuel vapor escape from the tank thus not allowing you to fill your tank.

We run into this issue alot in the body upfitter world. Lots of customers bring the trucks back to us with fill issues after they do a home install or a retrofit or it was too close to quiting time in the shop! When you start running 2-3 foot fuel fills you really have to make sure the vent hose is above the fill hose!
