Front inner axle seal replacement

Here are some pictures of the seals. The passenger side was leaking but I changed both sides. Not too bad besides trying to get the damn seals in straight.Had to modify my homemade seal tool toooooo many times.

With the help of Jason's(mechelement) great advise it went pretty well besides the seeal installation.I covered the carrier in ice after I got it out.Went right back in.

Good job!

I'm going to have to do mine when things get warmer. My truck don't fit in the garage and there is still 6" of snow out here.

That could be to your advantage. Put the carrier in a plastic bag and pack it in the snow. j/k

Good job, Barry. Nice pics. Tried to rep you, but you know how it is.

It is not a terrible job.You must get the new seals(2c3z-3254-aa)lined up straight and go easy.I am going to find the REAL set tool for putting those in.I just made my own and had to modify it too many times....Good luck

One can be made that will easily do the job with a couple of the right sized plates, nuts, and a piece of all thread. Picture of the Ford tool to follow.

That is exactly what I built but I did not have the correct size plates.I will be interested to see the Ford tool they mentioned in the manual I have. They did not have a picture.I am going to get me an assortment of those plates as well. They can be used for several different things.

Size: 7.2 KB I will make one similar to this when the time comes to install the seals myself. It will push them straight into the housing.

Here is the text from my Ford dvd manual: "Place the axle shaft oil seals onto the tool, and position the assembly into the differential housing. Lengthen the tool as necessary until both seals start evenly in the axle tubes. Continue to lengthen the tool until both step plates bottom out against the housing."
Sounds simple, doesn't it. lol

Does anyone have a part number for the tool?

For model 50 axles, use special tools 205-428, 205-425 (LH), and 205-424 (RH) to install the axle shaft oil seals.

From my manual. 205-424,425,426,427 are the stepped plates for the seals. 205-428 is the threaded bar.

Thanks Roland

I wonder if those are Ford numbers or an OTC number.

OTC... Looks like each part number sells for about $100+ each.
Looks like I will be fabbing something when the need comes around.

Keep your eyes peeled on CL and you can run across a nice seal installation and puller kit. I found a Snap-On kit the other day for $150 OBO. I didn't inquire, but see stuff like that all the time on CL here.

Doesn't a Dana 50 have the seals on the outside of the diff?
