It was a factory built truck, only made for a few short years. It was later renamed the F150 7700. 7700 was the GVW of those trucks. A bigger rear axle, and 7 lug wheels are just 2 of the differences between the F250/F150 7700 and a regular F150.
Ford bulit LD f250 in the 97-03 f150 body style ....i think they started in 1998 and went through to 2001 or 02....im not sure on the dates...at some point they called it the 7700lb gvw f150 too. it had seven lug wheels and heavier front torsion bars
The F250 Light Duty started in 1997 along with the last year of OBS F250 Heavy Duty (why you see those badges on F250 OBS trucks). It looked like the then new style F150. It carried through the 1999 model year and was available in a variety of drive and cab configurations. They were available with the 4.6 or 5.4 and automatic transmission. The auto could be either the 4r70w or 4r100. Not all f250 LD were 7700lb gvw, but that was the max available. All F250LD or 7700's had the 10.25 semi floating axle. All had (goofy) 7 lug wheels. Later in 04, Ford continued the use of the 7 lug wheels with a heavy payload F150. They weren't that common.
Starting in 2000, the F250LD was dropped mostly due to confusion in the product line. The same chassis became the F150 7700, which was available ONLY with the 5.4L. It was supposed to be available only with the 4r100 but there have been reports of some coming with the 4r70w. A by product (or the main reason depending on your viewpoint) of dropping the F250LD, is the F150 7700 now has the highest payload and gvw of any f150, trumping 1/2 ton trucks of the time. I know the one I owned had the highest payload of any truck I've owned at 2800lbs!
4x4 7700's came standard with plow prep.
Ford has had F-250 light and heavy duty models at different points in time. The giveaway is the full or semi floating axle. They continued that through the (then) new f150 body style. As of 2000 with the success of the Superduty line they have not offered a F250LD.
