The RTS 4 speed OD tranny can be found in ford pickups from the early to mid ‘80’s. They are an aluminum case with shifter on the top and 4th gear being overdrive. Jeep has T-176 and T-177 trannies with an aluminum case and 4th gear being straight through. They are both made by Tremec. For awhile now I have been thinking that maybe I could convert my RTS into a close ratio 4 speed by swapping in the Jeep internals.
I spotted some T-177 parts in the local paper for sale. When I went an looked at it I found that the overall length of the case is the same as my RTS, the centre-to-centre distance from the main shaft to the countershaft is the same, the countershaft is the same diameter and the reverse gears look identical. I would have bought the stuff but there was no input shaft or top cover with shifter.
It would be easier to replace the OD unit with a toploader from a car. Available with a (I think) 2.78 first gear in the wide ratio, and (I think) a 2.23 first gear in close ratio. 4th is 1:1
The only reason I would like to mess around with the RTS is that I have 2 of them...one in my truck and the other on the bench. I would only do it if I could find a T-176 or T-177 real cheap. Also I want to keep the top shifter because I bought new carpet and have already made the hole.
