I just bought a 2004 Ford F-250 4x4 crew cab with a V-8 gas engine, Auto transmission and FX package. The truck has about 29000 miles on it. I am the 2nd owner and bought the truck with 25000 miles it. I have been checking the gas mileage and I'm averaging about 10 to 10.5 miles to the Gal. around town (very easy driving), 13 to 15 on Highway. Everybody I talk to tells me I should be getting at least 15, they say that those number are what the V10 gets. Are there any suggestions on what could be wrong? It also has the Rancho shocks with the FX package and it rids reel ruff, could it be the shocks. I under stand that I bought a truck and not a car, But I own a 1998 ford E-350 (with same engine) and it rides so much smoother and I get about 14.5 to 15.6 per gal around town. Any help would be greatly appreciated. <O></O>
What gear ratio? 3.73 or 4.10. 4.10 will have worst mpg's
you may want to chk a few things
air filter, tire pressure.iac valve for idle air control.
tranny for slippage.
Also chk to see that your front hubs are unlocking which can cause drag on the front drive train
Here's comparison of what I get on my 04 V10. 10 - 11 MPG day to day, easy driving, 14 (approx) highway, OD, rolling hills and 9 (approx) towing about 4K trailer on the highway. Don't expect the V8 to get better than 1 - 1.5 MPG better than that. It has to work to move that big truck.
That's not that off. In-town, stop and go driving, 7000lb 4x4, that's about all it's gonna get. If where you drive is anything like where I drive, you barely get up to speed before you are stopping again. What you get for mileage is just about the same as my truck gets.
As for mileage vs. the E-350, the E-350 doesn't have a parachute in the back of it, it's not a 4x4 and it does not have all-terrain tires (I'm guessing.) If the truck was a SC SWB 2wd with street tires and a 6-speed, you might see 13-14 around town.
Mine gets about 12 in town and that is driving it real easy. No jack rabbit starts at lights, coasting down the hills, and pretending there is an egg under the pedal that I don't want to break. If you want better mileage go out and buy a Honda Civic. They get about 35-40 mpg.

We had this conversation not too long ago. It's alomost cheaper to buy a little econo-box than fuel my pig each month. V10, 45 mile one way trip to work, lift, 36" tires, ooooooooouuuuuuch! A little Jetta diesel getting 42-45 MPG looks better everyday. I'm just glad I'm in Afghanistan and don't have to pay for gas right now.
My 2003 F-250 single cab 5.4L V-8 with 3.73 gears gets 9 MPG in the winter with the plow on, and anywhere from 11-13 MPG in the summer. I really don't expect any more than that. It takes a lot of fuel to make 6000-7000 pounds move.

my 05 matches your 04 in mpg's and it has more hp's to feed
Yeah, yeah! Rub it in!
I'm starting a support group for 2V V10 owners.
I wonder what my MPG are when it's just sitting in the driveway? I'll have to see what it gets when I get to drive it with the 4.56's. I'm sure my first tank will go REAL quick.

I have the same truck except it's a Supercab and it gets 12-13 mpg going back and forth to work which is about 18 miles one way. Highway mileage was 15 mpg when it was new. It had about 1500 miles on it when I took a 150 mile trip.
