Just got my first misfire code. Bought the 2008 5.4L used 6 mos ago, has 135k miles on it. Lots to read here about the plug problem. In looking around the auto part stores here I see Autozone is selling the SP-546 and lists the SP-515 as an alternate part number.
A search in the forum didn't find any mention of the SP-546.
Is the SP-546 an upgrade to the SP-515?
Or should I stick with the SP-515
I noted that the coils on my plugs are aftermarkets so I'll be replacing them with the Motorcraft as well.
I should mention that I believe I have an early 2008, the VIN tells me that it is #6000 off the production line. Therefore I expect that I should have the black boots. I have yet to look at the engine build data which I think is on the valve cover....
*O'Reilly's shows both the SP515 and the SP-546 for sale for the Ford F150, black boot.
*Autozone shows the SP-546 as the rec. plug, SP515 is an alternate number for it.
Chat with Auto zone says SP-546 is an Autozone part number, but others use it.
*RockAuto has no chat or customer service that I can see, and says the SP-546 is
the plug for my truck.
*Ford Parts shows me the SP-546 plug....
*The forum says to buy the SP-515 and has no mention of the SP-546.
Sounds like they are the same plug.
Anyone got some input?
Ok, found my mistake.
I was searching the forum with ''SP-546" and came up empty.
If I search with "SP546" I find a few posts back in late August, early September where the plug is mentioned. Redfishtd and another seem to think this is a new replacement for the SP515.
You already have figured it out by now, but I'll close the loop for others reading: The SP-515 have been superseded by the SP-546 by Ford. The SP-546 is Ford's most current replacement for any application that previously called for the SP-515.
Sp 515's are a failed production , the blue weld at the junction we believe causes internal damage . Ford quietly replaced them with sp546's .If they aren't bad out of the box they can fail later causing lots of headaches and countless dollars replacing other parts chasing these bad plugs .
Ford has never discussed this . So throwaway the 515's you aren't going to get a refund . Using them is self defeating -Russian roulette .
