Chips could be caused from abuse, or it could be they were hand painted since these are pre production units. Or it could be they are wearing through already.

For some reason, Ford thinks the "upper" trims should have lots of the silver-painted plastic...versus the textured black of XL. The XLTs have less painted silver, but still a fair amount. The color looks OK, but I'd prefer something more durable...especially in a high-use area like a door pull.

Here's mine on the way to Dells WI last month. Plastic facing constant heat and vibration = bad idea! It's a known weakness and lots of guys keep a spare for long trips... Wish I had... The other option is a metal replacement from H&S. Anyways, fun times on I90...

Yep.... I blew my dads off his 2011 last week on Toll 130 in Texas. Dealer said I could drive/limp it to the closest dealer...which was about 30 min away. Only did 45 with hazards on. Thanks for the reminder to maybe keep a spare in the future. Pop was so loud sounded like I ran over a shopping cart...LOL

Yup, sounded like a 22LR going off. Blew the upper retaining rings into the hood so hard it stripped the paint and lodged the rings into the under hood cross bracing. I had 19k behind me and was on a busy interstate so I couldn't limp anywhere. I was so lucky to have an awesome Ford dealer (West Herr out of Buffalo) deliver me a replacement in the service area I pulled off into! Less than a minute with a 7/16ths deep well to change. I had to pay the full retail of $145 including tax when it should have been covered under warranty but no time for that. For anyone looking, there are dealers on eBay that sell them delivered for $100.

Exactly. My 2011 rear door pulls show similar wear. I'd prefer a homogeneous plastic that is the same color when worn/scratched - I think whatever they used on the upper dash would be great.
