Locking hub/front axle help

On my 2000 4x4 my passenger side hub is hard to turn. I Need pliers To Turn it. I found a set of warn locking hubs in the junkyard so u grabbed them. I took off old passenger hub (then I noticed it was hard to turn because the metal has been hit a few times and the **** isn't flush anymore). Installed the warn (and a rotor) and turned the wheel everything was normal. I locked the hub and turned it and there was rattling in the hub (which it didn't do that with with the old hub if I remember correctly). I unlocked it and it was back to normal so I pulled the hub off to reinstall my factory one. But before I did that I was messing with the axle and there is play in it up, down, left, and right. Is that normal if not what could it be? I didn't mess with the drivers side and I was changing my rotor that's why I had the car jacked up.

Here are 2 articles that explain how to remove and disassemble the hubs to clean and service them.

As for the play in the shaft, there is a needle bearing inside the unit bearing that the axle shaft rides on. That is probably toast. There are also axle shaft seals that are probably worn out and need replaced. This post may help with that: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post16123971

All the parts I ordered are in the bottom of that post with prices and where I got them from.

Additional Info

If you are tackling this job and you live in the rust belt, be prepared to order new ABS sensors. The rubber o-ring on them seizes to the unit bearing and the typically just rip apart. You can get new ones from Rock Auto or if you want to just replace the unit bearings (a bit more pricey) they come with sensors installed.

Finally, if you are reusing the old bearings, get one of these adapters from RiffRaff Diesel. Front ABS Grease-able Block Off Fitting for Ford 7.3L 99-04
This allows you to grease the non-serviceable unit bearing. It is cheap insurance to prevent them from wearing out prematurely. Use a good synthetic NGL1 or 2 grease. I prefer AMSOIL.

Hope this helps

Warn doesn't state it anywhere unless you call and talk to customer support, you must use a standard type grease and apply a thin coat to every part in the warn hub. I was told once a year to disassemble the locking cap clean and regrease. My Warns were doing this and I changed everything and still had the chunks, called CS and was told to clean and grease everything, did that and it was night and day. Been five months and hubs are still quiet with no chunks or bangs, not even when using 4wd
