The pump will be labeled if it dispenses diesel #1. Generally, #1 fuel is found only in arctic climates where temperatures are continously below 0F. I can only name a few places in Colorado that sell it. Also, since you are from a colder climate, be careful of fuel gelling in temperatures below about 20F. This can be remidied by adding an anti-gel additive such as Howes, Powerservice or Rotella DFA, or buying fuel that has been winterized by the station. This may or may not be marked... you will have to inquire locally. Also, you may encounter preimum diesel... this is diesel #2 with a minimum cetane rating of 49... the diesel version of high test gasoline.
Hope this helps

John F-250,
I highly doubt you would find #1 in so cal. If you did by chance get #1, you would notice decreased performance, because of the properties of the fuel (see post by 8ballzs). If you are not sure, it never hurts to inquire locally about the fuel being dispensed. Also, an opinion based on experience... make sure you go to a station that sells alot of diesel fuel. You have less of a chance of problems due to water in fuel, sediment, etc.
Happy dieseling
Brian

Yeah, i know, but i was trying to give the guy a generic answer since i didn't know where in this great country he was.
BTW, do you notice much variation in your MPG based on where you buy your fuel?
poco I have tryed buying fuel at just about everyplace in memphis that sells diesel. no diff. just really bumed love every thing else about truck except mpg.
The closest diesel stop that I know of is about 30 miles away. I'm going to talk to some local stations about their quality and volume...and when I'm in the vicinity of a diesel stop, I'll take advantage of it. Especially my river trips this year.
