Banks Sidewinder Turbo | A Trip Back In Time; Trailer Life - March 1993 + pre-turbo install
iv got to get my meter on it now and time it again.she's sounding like a gas job.i'll probably be fine tuning for a week with the fuel and timing.
i have to see why this air filter isn't sealing up the plastic housing.it's wasting my pressurized cowl duct, due to the large crack around the filter.must have clamped it on too far back or something.kinda odd they didn't just seal the front right up.
this turbo whistles loud, instantly right off idle good though.
first off,i knew i had my fuel screw up too high when it was N/A
i had installed a fresh ip from that U-Haul clear out.it was set pretty high, and i had a mushy fuel pedal.i turned her down 1 flat to clear up the smoke.i always had a feeling it could of taken another 1/2 flat down because the very bottom of the fuel pedal just felt blank.at least before though,it was total mush up a flat too high.
well now iv got the turbo on,and up at least 1 full flat, and just about another half flat by guess.it feel's really nice.i purposely took the hilly road back home so i could let it out a bit.

she's all power, all the way to the floor.im feeling the largest increase in the upper rpms of course.BUT i do also notice, when im driving granny style, she takes off and flows down the road @ 45mph much easier too.
new banks pyro and boost gauge are in the mail.they'll be here Monday.
also checked in with banks for the intermediate pipe (pipe from DP to muffler)
he left a message with about $100 for it.but i dunno if that's for the 3" or 3.5 "monster" i guess they call it.not sure if anyone would bend up and fit a section in cheaper than that lol.so i'll probably call up and order that tomorrow.
it's amazing how you can drive a truck with a wide open exhaust (minis the 2500-3200 spikes matted to the floor on the hills tests.
and not really be all that bothered.i wouldn't want to run a straight pipe personally or anything, but that turbo really does tone 'em down like everyone says.should be real clean when hooked back up to the straight threw 3.5" system again.
she's probably begging for more fuel (and likely a turbo ip) now,i just dunno yet until i get my gauges.
so far, (boosting too low still probably) you can really feel the extra torque more than the extra hp but that's clearly there too.she will set ya back in the seat a bit if you nail 'er going up a steep grade.

did i mention my truck sounds like an airplane now? lol.

i sure hope that whistle tones down by at least half with the exhaust hooked up.though kinda cool and all, that could get old kinda fast.
so my boost gauge came earlier than expected so i hooked that up and got 9 psi spikes.just about right for the kit.the directions say she's setup for 9.5ish.so the turbo is likely designed to work well at 10 psi or less.im no expect in turbos.just trusting banks knows best lol.
then i set my timing.not sure why,but timing was advanced a few degree's.so i retarded back to specs to 6 degrees ATDC using the lumy method.thats roughly 7-8 BTDC via the pulse method.
she started pulling grades even harder and faster and also gained 1 lb of boost, now peaking at 10 psi - 8k lb empty truck- very steep grade - WOT.
now with increased power,it can clearly be seen that timing adjustment works just like a gas engine.retard the timing for increased top end, advance for low end,in the middle of the road for a sweet spot of each.
due to being advanced,i lacked the high end of the spectrum a tad.now she screams and holds against the governor up hill until she gains enough speed for the next gear.i sure was impressed by that one.
to finish up:
banks intermediate pipe (just cutting out the 1 foot section i need from dp to my 3")
basically im just paying for that bend.with fuel to drive an hour and back from a shop, paying them to bend a 3" section for me,it would end up being the same $ or more anyway probably.
correct air filter to fit housing.
egt gauge.
perhaps covering the intake system up with some heat insulation, pressure chamber and plastic housing to keep incoming cowl air as cold as possible.maybe a turbo cover of some sort would be good too to help keep more heat in there and bit lower under hood temps.basically maximize the system as much as possible for best efficiency.
then it's on to the intercooler.

great kit.though these are expensive when buying new (used for that matter, according to my wallet) these are worth every penny.these engines belong turbocharged!
i recall Jayme saying the waste gate was set for 13 psi.
i forgot i need to tone this back down before i start working the engine with a load.
do you hear a waste gate work,or how do i fine tune this?
i gather i'll need to do this road side when loaded up the first time? the more load on the engine, the higher the boost will get on me right? help this turbo noob out guys.keeping in mine im after 0% smoke under all conditions and max economy.i don't think maintaining local speed limits of 45 mph up hills will be much of an issue,no matter how i set 'er up,cus n/a could do that fairly well lol.the 55 mph zones we have, have no large steep hills (as a rule) like the back roads w/ 45-50 mph limits,so no issue there.
I think I figured one complete turn was around 1 psi), that was all I was gonna go up anyway so I left it there. Just make sure you don't turn the rod inside the head! That will totally screw up the wastegate diaphragm, you put the top part of the rod in a vise and simply turn the bottom part. Shorter rod = higher boost.
Hope this helps, glad you are finally boosted!
XLT: I think you will notice with your turbo that your engine runs much more powerfully when its first started(cold), then as minutes go on and the engine heats up, the air gets hotter and the engine runs more doggish. You will see what I mean after some time. Its still much more powerful than stock.... buts that problem is mainly what a intercooler will fi

boost/egt gauges and exhaust pipe bent up from DP to my 3.5" pipe.
iv gone up 1.5 flats for now until i get gauges in her.ol chipper truck sure likes this stuff.can't wait to load her up w/ the chipper in tow.

she has a major loud whistle!
after giving her 1.5 flats,i took the old 8k lb emty truck up a large local hill.she sure can climb now! hang on.

few more details on the install of Eatons thread.we were doing 'em at the same time and sharing tips over in his thread.i kinda rudely just hopped in without asking hahaha hope ya didn't mind Eaton and best of luck with yours.it's all worth it!!
this is great guys! im extremely impressed.
grossing about 13,500 here in the pics today.
this truck now goes (turbo) as well as she stops (hydroboost.)
it's just like driving a 7.3l psd truck (a stock one) if not better! (it's been a few years.)
she starts out easier, goes down the road easier, and pulls a hill like nobodies business.
one hill i commonly go over, which puts me WOT and in 2nd gear when loaded up like this as n/a was at 40-45mph and screaming.
now boosting about 8-9 lbs WOT she took it with ease in 3rd @ 55mph and would had kept on climbing (and fast i might add) had i not backed off her about half way up!
just driving down the road 45-55mph in OD without any real load/boost gauge reading 0 trumps N/A - seriously.
if anyone is even slightly thinking about buying a banks turbo.stop the thinking and just do it.brand spanking new if you have to and can afford it.it really is worth it.
had i known what i know now,i wouldn't have hesitated to call up banks or buy it online brand new.very happy i found one used of course, but would be all smiles if i payed full price too.she goes so easy.the engine doesn't need to work so hard anymore.
now i can't wait for the intercooler.

i set timing to exactly 6 degrees ATDC (that's aprox 8.5 BTDC to those with the more modern pulse adapters)
i noticed while tuning 4-5 ATDC (about 9.5-10.5 BTDC) was a bit more "snappy" or "crisp" on the low end,but the high end wasn't there like at 6.
now i know i don't need so much upper lol.im going to run her at 6 for 10-15 tanks to track economy, then step it up a degree and track another 10-15 tanks.plenty of power either way.so the best economy timing setting will win.
now i have a gauge to help me hypermile.the boost gauge.im taking off slow and easy enough to try and keep the gauge reading 0 on the flats.
yes.after researching,iv decided on the hypermax 6.9l/7.3l kit size to keep things cool for max efficiency from the turbo.
i am still torn between going threw all the hassle of wrapping the pipes.
go through the hassle.you want to maximize efficiency of what you have.it's that or spend $ on ceramic coating.
snaponprofile,
i don't notice any performance difference between a cold engine, and when she's up to 200ish normal op temps.
but then again,i drive pretty easy,so i might just not be giving her enough fuel to tell the difference lol.
..........
well after working the truck some more,i can now claim i have more power than needed under any conditions for my trucks purpose/uses.
if i put her to the floor to use all she's got,it's purely for fun and hasn't been required once.iv pulled some pretty good grades while loaded too.just enough for 2500-3kish rpms kicked down out of overdrive into 3rd yields easy 45-55 mph speed limits.i can speed up a hill if i keep on her when loaded right up and towing the chipper.
i have both my gauges installed now.EGT's running a nice 400-600ish empty, and pretty much the same loaded besides the hills, then i see brief 900ish - i think 950 might have been the max iv seen so far.i wasn't towing anything, but i had the bed full of green red oak.
max boost peaks seem to be 9.5psi with most hills just requiring 5ish to maintain local speed limits.
it's like a brand new truck.
fuel economy increase still to be determined.on 3rd tank now.
just got the banks intermediate pipe.i cut it just after the bend from the dp,to step it up quickly into my 3.5" system.
she sounds perfect now with the free flow muffler.nice deep yet quite.that muffler was too much as n/a and got old.
she sure sounds nice and new now.
hooking her all up through the exhaust with muffler, has canceled out the loud turbo whistle, which i must say,im ok with.though kinda neat,i prefer this quite ride.getting old i guess boys lol.
i think all that's left is the banks air filter to replace an incorrectly fitted aftermarket which doesn't seal up.
once i fit that in,the pressure from the cowl can work much better instead of going wasted into the engine bay.
im sure plenty here would recommend turning my fuel up some more based on the egt's,but im happy still seeing 0% smoke, and like i say,iv no need for the total performance now available anyway.so no point in hurting fuel economy by giving her any more fuel.
fuel economy increase or not (i can tell it's there, based on what iv been doing, and the speeds iv been doing already) adding a turbo sure is the monster ticket everyone on the forums claim.they're not exaggerating one bit.she sure makes the truck so much more enjoyable to drive, and reduced the stressed on my engine and trans greatly.neither are working so hard anymore.
"According to Banks, during development testing the Sidewinder-turbocharged Ford produced a peak power rating of 264 hp at 3300 rpm and a peak torque of 503 lb-ft at 1600 rpm, measured at the engine's flywheel, as manufacturers do."
if this is so (and sure sounds right to me) the only thing i worry about now is my oem e40d converter.id hate to have that go out and clean out my trans.an upgrade is planned..............does this ever end? someone tell me im getting close to finished at least.
