2006 5.4 3v whirring noise

This just graced my door and I am kinda at a loss as to what it could be. I am hoping that maybe one of you could help me out as to what it is.

Codes in it are #8 cylinder misfire, evap emission leak large, and random misfire. It is also giving a check fuel cap message on the message center.

It is a 2006 f250 4x4 106k miles. Within seconds after cranking, it will develop a whirring sound. Almost sounds like a bad bearing. Taking the belt off does not make the sound go away.

Anyway, if you take the oil fill cap off, the sound goes away. If you try to take it off with it running, it has quite a suction on it. It makes a sucking sound there if it is turned off and you are there.

I am thinking valve and will try to diagnose further Monday but have any of you experience such a thing? I looked for a pcv valve but only found a tube with a heater built into it. Is there another one somewhere?

Have you have put a vacuum gauge on this engine. If it was an intake valve you would have a major fluctuating needle for sure but wouldn't explain the crankcase vacuum.
I'm just thinking out loud, this has me curious, let us know how you made out.

There was a hose mix up behind the air filter housing. The intake hose for the pcv system had been swapped with a vacuum hose that fed the solenoid for the evap emission system. They are both a quick connect style and had been hooked back up wrong. We parked another truck (same year and engine) just like it next to it and traced out the hoses. We elimated other possibilities first and were sure it was something in the pcv system. It was, just not an error on someone's fault.

I guess i should have started with we pulled the #8 plug and coil and checked it first. Also, dropped a small boroscope into the hole and took a peep around. Coil was bad (water). Plug was ok. It was tuned up in the summer so I have a feeling the hose mixup occurred then.

We had a v10 doing something similar back last winter that did drop a valve. That was what originally made me wonder about it when it came in that weekend.
